What does a data engineer at Palantir do?

A Data Engineer at Palantir is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining the data infrastructure that powers Palantir’s software platforms. They work closely with clients to ingest, process, and transform large volumes of data from disparate sources, ensuring that data is reliable, accessible, and optimized for analysis. Data Engineers also collaborate with other technical teams to implement data integration pipelines, develop scalable solutions, and help organizations make data-driven decisions using Palantir's tools.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a data engineer at Palantir?

To thrive as a Data Engineer at Palantir, you need strong programming skills (Python, Java, or Scala), in-depth knowledge of database systems, and experience with large-scale data pipelines, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Proficiency with big data tools like Apache Spark, Hadoop, and Palantir Foundry, as well as familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure), is typically required. Outstanding problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and adaptability help you work effectively in dynamic, cross-functional teams. These skills and qualities are vital for building robust data solutions that drive impactful insights and support complex client operations.

What are common challenges data engineers face when working with Palantir's platforms, and how can they be addressed?

Data Engineers at Palantir often encounter challenges such as integrating disparate data sources, maintaining data quality, and ensuring data security within complex environments. Job description

About the role

Data Engineer with hands-on Palantir Foundry experience to design, build, and operate production pipelines and ontologies. You'll own pipelines end-to-end — from raw ingestion to curated ontology objects — and partner with analysts, data scientists, and business owners to deliver governed data products.

Work Authorization:

U.S. Citizens or Lawful Permanent Residents (Green Card Holders) only due to client ITAR requirements

Required qualifications:

  • 5–6 years of professional data engineering experience.
  • Hands-on production Palantir Foundry, including Code Repos, Pipeline Builder, Ontology Manager, Workshop.
  • Strong Python, PySpark, and SQL with proven Spark performance tuning.
  • Solid grasp of dimensional modeling, incremental processing, and data quality frameworks.
  • Experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP and modern formats (Parquet, Delta, Iceberg).
  • Comfortable with Git-based workflows and CI/CD.
  • Must be a US citizen or Green Card holder. Not eligible for visa sponsorship or transfer.

What you'll do:

  • Build scalable Foundry pipelines using PySpark, Python, and SQL transforms.
  • Model and maintain Ontology objects, links, and actions for core business entities.
  • Develop operational apps with Workshop, Quiver, and Contour for end users.
  • Integrate Foundry with upstream sources (DBs, APIs, cloud storage) and downstream consumers.
  • Implement data quality checks, health monitors, and incremental builds.
  • Apply Foundry's security model — markings, projects, RBAC — for governance and compliance.
  • Mentor engineers on Foundry best practices and pipeline design patterns.
