Day Shift Cook information

What does a day shift cook do?

A Day Shift Cook is responsible for preparing and cooking meals during the daytime hours in restaurants, cafeterias, or other food service establishments. Their duties typically include following recipes, ensuring food quality and safety, setting up and stocking workstations, and maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen. They may also assist with menu planning and work closely with other kitchen staff to ensure efficient service for breakfast and lunch meals. Day Shift Cooks play a key role in delivering a positive dining experience for customers.

What are some common challenges a day shift cook faces during a typical shift?

Day Shift Cooks often manage high-volume orders during peak meal times, which requires strong multitasking and time management skills. Balancing food preparation, cooking, and plating while maintaining food safety standards can be demanding, especially in a fast-paced kitchen environment. Additionally, Day Shift Cooks frequently collaborate with kitchen staff and front-of-house teams to ensure smooth service. Adapting to menu changes and handling unexpected supply shortages are also common challenges that can arise during a typical shift.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a day shift cook, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Day Shift Cook, you need strong culinary skills, food safety knowledge, and experience in meal preparation, often supported by a high school diploma or culinary training. Familiarity with commercial kitchen equipment, point-of-sale (POS) systems, and safe food handling certifications (such as ServSafe) is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and teamwork are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure efficient kitchen operations, consistent food quality, and a safe, collaborative work environment.

If you love fast-paced kitchens and creating craveable dishes, we’d love to meet you!

In 1960, Walt and Dorothy Elmer opened breakfast focused Elmer’s Colonial Pancake House in Portland, OR. Truly a family owned and operated labor of love, Walt, Dorothy, and their three sons poured their hearts into serving the local community. It was an immediate success thanks to their commitment to bringing people together for home-style cooking, using only the finest ingredients.
Built on the foundation of Walt Elmer’s famous buttermilk pancakes, the original recipe for pancake batter was purchased for $1,000 and rumor has it that Walt kept it locked in his safe. We still use Walt’s original recipe today!
Over the years, the menu was expanded with lunch and dinner items and the restaurant became Elmer’s Pancake & Steakhouse. In 1966, Elmer’s began franchising and continues to grow to this day.
Today, we continue to honor the values of the Elmer’s family by delivering seasonally fresh entrees and premium, made-from-scratch favorites served with care in a warm, inviting family atmosphere.
With 18 company-operated locations throughout Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Arizona, there are many opportunities for advancement.
We invite you to explore our career opportunities and join our team. It is our team that has made Elmer's a Northwest favorite from 1960 to today!
