Children's Program Mentor (After-School Program)

About BGC Jane and Finch Club

BGC Jane and Finch Club is committed to providing children and youth with safe, inclusive, and engaging programs that inspire learning, leadership, healthy living, and positive relationships.

Our After-School Program provides children ages 5-10 with a safe and welcoming environment where they can participate in recreation, sports, creative arts, literacy, homework support, leadership development, and healthy living activities.

We are seeking enthusiastic, dependable, energetic, and caring individuals to join our team as Children's Program Mentors for the 2026-2027 school year.


Position Summary

The Children's Program Mentor plays an essential role in creating a safe, welcoming, and engaging after-school environment for children. Working under the direction of the Site Lead and Children's Program Coordinator, mentors are responsible for assisting with the planning and delivery of high-quality recreational and educational programming while ensuring the safety, well-being, and positive development of every participant.

Please Note: Successful candidates may be assigned to any of the above program locations based on operational needs and staffing requirements. Staff may also be required to provide relief support at other BGC Jane and Finch Club program locations as needed.


Key Responsibilities

Program Planning & Delivery

  • Assist in planning and facilitating engaging daily after-school programming.
  • Deliver age-appropriate recreation, sports, literacy, homework support, creative arts, STEM, and healthy living activities.
  • Support programming aligned with the Ontario After School Program Guidelines.
  • Encourage participation while promoting teamwork, inclusion, leadership, and positive youth development.
  • Build positive and respectful relationships with children through active participation and mentorship.


Child Supervision & Safety

  • Provide active supervision of children at all times.
  • Maintain appropriate staff-to-child ratios.
  • Promote positive behavior through encouragement, conflict resolution, and restorative practices.
  • Ensure all children are signed in and out according to program procedures.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies, injuries, illnesses, and behavioral incidents.
  • Follow all BGC Jane and Finch Club policies, Ontario health and safety regulations, child protection procedures, and food safety standards.


Program Operations

  • Prepare program spaces before participants arrive.
  • Assist with snack preparation and distribution following food handling procedures.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and welcoming program spaces.
  • Assist with attendance tracking, daily documentation, and incident reporting.
  • Maintain program supplies, equipment, and inventory.
  • Assist with daily program set-up and clean-up.


Teamwork

  • Work collaboratively with Site Leads, Program Coordinators, volunteers, placement students, and fellow mentors.
  • Attend all mandatory staff meetings, orientations, and professional development sessions.
  • Support PA Day programs, school break programming, community events, and family engagement initiatives.
  • Provide support at alternate program locations when operationally required.


Communication

  • Build respectful and professional relationships with children, families, school staff, and colleagues.
  • Communicate concerns, behavioral incidents, injuries, and parent inquiries promptly to supervisors.
  • Represent BGC Jane and Finch Club professionally within the community.


Qualifications

Required

  • Currently enrolled in or graduated from one of the following (or a related field):
    • Early Childhood Education (ECE)
    • Child & Youth Care (CYC)
    • Child & Youth Worker (CYW)
    • Social Service Worker (SSW)
    • Recreation & Leisure
    • Education
  • Experience working with children ages 5-10 in a structured environment.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to lead sports, games, arts, educational, literacy, or recreational activities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.


Mandatory Certifications

Applicants must possess or obtain prior to employment:

  • Standard First Aid & CPR-C Certification
  • HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development Certification
  • Valid Food Handler Certificate
  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Record Check


Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in:
    • After-School Programs
    • Summer Camps
    • Recreation Programs
    • Community Organizations
  • Experience supporting children with diverse learning, behavioral, or developmental needs.
  • Knowledge of the Ontario After School Program Guidelines.


Availability

Applicants must be available Monday through Friday throughout the school year.

Required Availability:

  • Between 2:45 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., depending on assigned program location.
