Job description

Location: Rochester (Pittsford), NY (Hybrid opportunity)
Description: Harris Beach Murtha seeks a career-minded associate-level attorney to work on a variety of issues in the labor and employment practice group. This position will, among other things, perform research, writing and other work relating to all areas of labor and employment law including, but not limited to, discrimination/harassment/retaliation litigation, wage and hour litigation, traditional labor/union issues, collective bargaining matters, day-to-day client advice and any other area impacting the employment relationship.
Responsibilities:
  • Perform research into a variety of labor and employment matters
  • Draft and revise handbooks and policies
  • Draft position statements and responses to administrative charges (EEOC, NY State Division of Human Rights, CT Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities)
  • Communicate directly with clients for a variety of reasons including providing day-to-day legal advice, as needed
  • Draft motions in federal and state court
  • Respond to discovery requests
  • Draft deposition outlines, prepare exhibits, prepare witnesses
  • First and second chair depositions
  • Assist partners in preparing for mediations, arbitrations, oral arguments, hearings, fact finding conferences, and trials
  • Second chair and where appropriate first chair mediations, arbitrations, oral arguments, hearings and trials
  • A minimum of 1800 billable hours annually is expected

Qualifications:
  • 1-4+ years' experience in labor and employment law or in litigation
  • Admission to New York State Bar required
  • Must have Juris Doctorate degree with an ABA accredited law school and be an active member in good standing of the bar
  • Must have excellent research and writing skills
  • Must be able to effectively communicate orally and in writing
  • Must be able to function effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Demonstrated high level organizational skills for prioritizing workload
  • Demonstrated ability to absorb, process and understand new information rapidly
  • Maintains high standards of performance
  • Exhibits conscientiousness, dedication, self-discipline, and a sense of responsibility
  • Must have a professional, cooperative, positive and flexible attitude
  • Ability to work with diverse personalities within various levels of the organization
  • Military experience welcome

Salary information below will vary depending upon relevant experience for the position and geographic locations.
