Computational Physics, Inc. (CPI) is looking for a full-time
IT Generalist to join our Corporate Technology team. CPI is an employee-owned (ESOP) research and development company founded in 1984, providing scientific and information technology services to U.S. Government organizations and prime contractors, including the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and the U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO).
The IT Generalist provides day-to-day IT support to approximately 90 employees, maintains core infrastructure, and contributes to technology initiatives across a hybrid and cleared-facility environment. This is a hands-on, high-variety role for someone who enjoys solving problems and keeping people productive. On Monday you might be configuring a new workstation, on Tuesday helping a colleague with a dual-monitor setup, and on Wednesday sourcing quotes for a new laptop. Reporting to the Corporate Technology Manager, you will be the front line of IT support and a steady contributor to the systems that keep CPI running.
What You'll Do- Help desk and end-user support. Serve as the first point of contact for hardware, software, and connectivity issues via email, chat, phone, and in person. Install and troubleshoot applications, and manage printer, peripheral, and AV/conference room equipment.
- Workstation deployment. Image, configure, deploy, and maintain Windows, Linux, and macOS workstations and laptops, and track IT asset inventory and lifecycle documentation.
- Account administration. Administer user accounts in Google Workspace, JumpCloud, and on-prem Active Directory.
- Infrastructure and systems. Support and monitor on-premises and cloud infrastructure including servers, storage, and networking equipment, and support backup, recovery, and business continuity procedures.
In addition, the IT Generalist will:
- Maintain endpoint security - assist with patch management, antivirus, and endpoint security compliance across managed devices.
- Document the network - assist with maintaining and documenting network configurations including switches, firewalls, and wireless access points.
- Administer collaboration tools - help administer collaboration and productivity tools, primarily Google Workspace.
- Support security and compliance - support information security policies and procedures in accordance with NIST SP 800-171 and applicable government contract requirements, and assist with CMMC/DFARS compliance activities as directed.
- Protect controlled information - follow security incident identification and escalation procedures, and ensure proper handling and access controls for controlled unclassified information (CUI).
- Support projects and migrations - assist with IT infrastructure upgrades, system migrations, and tool implementations.
- Maintain documentation - keep technical documentation, SOPs, and knowledge base articles current.
- Evaluate vendors - assess vendor solutions and make recommendations to the Corporate Technology Manager.
- Mentor end users - provide guidance and informal mentoring to colleagues across the company.
Required Qualifications- Associate's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field - or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 1-3 years of IT support or help desk experience in a professional environment.
- Working knowledge of Windows 11 and macOS.
- Familiarity with Active Directory, cloud-based IAM tools, and productivity and collaboration suites (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365).
- Familiarity with network and endpoint security.
- Familiarity with basic networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPN).
- Strong customer service orientation and written and verbal communication skills.
- S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications- Familiarity with Linux in a workstation or server environment.
- Experience supporting a cleared-facility or federal contracting environment.
- Exposure to NIST SP 800-171, CMMC, or DFARS compliance activities.
- Relevant certifications (e.g., CompTIA A+, Network+, or Security+).
- Ability to obtain a U.S. Government security clearance.
LocationSpringfield, VA (CPI Headquarters). Primarily office-based with hybrid flexibility; must be available on-site as business needs require. Travel is minimal (under 10%). The role may require occasional after-hours support for system maintenance or critical incidents, and occasional lifting of IT equipment up to 40 lbs.
