Job description

General Summary This is your chance to be a part of the 2022 National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) National Gold Medal winning park system. A Camp BREC Counselor works at Recreation and/or Special Facility locations assisting in organization and operation of daily camp activities, supervising sports, recreational/educational activities on site and on field trips, supervising and actively participating with a group of campers, assisting with related inventories and paperwork, adhering to operating and safety rules and regulations. Requirements and Job Specifications Qualification Required: Counselors must be at least 18 years of age or older and have experience working with children.

Education Required: High School Diploma or equivalent. Experience Preferred: Experience and/or desire to work with children in an indoor/outdoor setting. Has some work experience preferably in Recreation, Physical Education, Elementary Education or related discipline desired.

Volunteer experience and paid work experience with children is accepted. A Camp Counselor has a wide range of responsibilities, and some camps require special expertise such as: Camp Sunshine - Special Education/Therapeutic Recreation Zoo - Biology/Zoology/Wildlife Management/Pre-Vet Farr Park - considerable horseback riding experience Magnolia Mound - History/Anthropology/Archeology Functions and Duties Typical duties of a Camp Counselor include, but are not limited do: Supervise 10-15 children 8-10 hours in an indoor and/or outdoor environment. Foster a fun-active, healthy, and safe environment.

Assisting with organization, promotion, leading and teaching of one or more activity classes of the camping program including: nature study, arts and crafts, sports, games, music, special features, events or field trips. Acting as advisor, counselor, manager of group of participants. Communicating, enforcing, and adhering to rules and regulations for operation, safety and welfare of participants.

Reporting to supervisor on activities, participants, plans, programs, problems and needs: recommending action, carrying our policies and objectives of programs. Ability to work with campers, staff, parents, and general public; Leadership skills, including ability to inspire confidence and enthusiasm to associates, participants, and parents. Maintain appropriate records and inventories, create reports.

Supplemental Information Work Availability Required: Full-time - Seasonal 11 weeks - May 18, 2026 to August 7, 2026 Training Week: May 25-29 (Community Recreation) and May 18-29 (Special Facilities) Summer Camp Timeframe: June 1-August 7 Seasonal position, as scheduled for day camp sessions, within general framework of 8 hours per day, 5 days per week; meal break as needed.
