AspectDatabase PublishingDesktop Publisher
Required SkillsDatabase management, scripting, data integrationDesign, layout, graphic skills
Work EnvironmentData-driven publishing, automated workflowsCreative design, manual layout
Industry UsagePublishing houses, data-intensive industriesAdvertising, marketing, print media

Database Publishing involves automating the creation of documents by integrating data from databases, focusing on data management and scripting. Desktop Publishers primarily focus on designing and laying out visual content manually. While both roles contribute to publishing, Database Publishing emphasizes data-driven automation, whereas Desktop Publishing centers on creative design and visual presentation.

What is database publishing?

Database publishing is the process of using software to automatically generate documents, catalogs, reports, or other materials by merging content stored in a database with design templates. This method enables organizations to efficiently produce large volumes of personalized or regularly updated content without manual formatting. It is widely used in industries like retail, publishing, and marketing to ensure accuracy, consistency, and fast turnaround times for documents such as product catalogs, directories, and price lists.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in database publishing and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Database Publishing often encounter challenges such as managing large volumes of data with varying formats, ensuring data integrity and consistency, and meeting tight publication deadlines. Additionally, adapting to frequently updated publishing tools and software can be demanding. These challenges can be addressed by staying current with industry-standard tools, implementing robust data quality checks, and fostering strong communication with cross-functional teams like IT, editorial, and design to streamline workflows and resolve issues quickly.

Solutions Analyst - Digital Publishing

East View Companies

Hopkins, MN โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Retirement, PTO

Posted 13 days ago

Job description

East View is a leading provider of information products and services, including online databases and print publications from global sources, with particular focus on Russia and the former Soviet Union, East Asia, and the Middle East.  Our information products are in the local languages of these regions as well as in English.  We serve all geographies and many market segments, including academic institutions, government organizations, corporations, public and federal libraries, and law firms.  The East View content portfolio covers more than 130 countries and 80 languages, and we serve customers worldwide.
We are searching for a full-time Solutions Analyst - Digital Publishing.  This Digital Humanities-oriented position will be hybrid:  rooted in in-office presence with some flexibility for working outside the office.  This position will manage multiple high-level tasks and duties in support of creating digital databases, mostly serving researchers in Digital Humanities in university environments in North America and elsewhere.  Responsibilities include assessing project scope and technical specifications (anticipating and managing flows of digital output resulting from digitization and OCR of typically humanities-oriented materials), coordination between internal project sponsors and supporting technical vendors, and cross-functional communication to report on problems and progress.
A successful candidate will have an interest and understanding in digital humanities research, if not a background in this area, and posses exceptional organizational leadership, and interpersonal skills to manage, direct, and influence internal stakeholders and a keen interest in technology.  Additionally, the Solutions Analyst will interface with vendors and at times with clients.
Key Duties:
  • Interpreting high-level project goals and technical requirements from the Director of Digital Publishing and translating them into detailed project plans with clear deliverables and tracking metrics.
  • Interacting with digital imaging and processing vendors (including our internal DigiLab and external partners who are scanning original research documents and creating digital files), internal project sponsors, and other technical partners (including internal IT department, platform vendors and client-side technical staff) to determine and manage the most efficient processes for intake of digital files and creation of custom online solutions for the use of the materials in an academic setting.
  • Working across product lines to bring existing databases up to the industry standards (AI integration, Voluntary Accessibility Templates (VPATs), usage statistics, etc.)
  • Leading project meetings, building and maintaining project timelines and providing reporting as needed for project leads and Director of Digital Publishing.
  • Proactively identifying project roadblocks and scope creep (critical, since each project is custom).
  • Communicating with management from other departments to prepare inter-departmental meetings to report on project statuses.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in the humanities, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of one or more foreign languages (both spoken and written) is strongly preferred as this is often a feature of the databases we produce.
  • 3+ years of Microsoft Office - specifically Excel, is essential.
  • 1+ year of Amazon S3, File Management, Digital Asset Management software is desired, or a strong interest and aptitude to successfully learn and use.
Please submit a cover letter along with a resume when applying.
Benefits:
  • This is an onsite position based in the Minneapolis, MN metro area with limited flexibility for remote work.
  • Benefits include medical, dental, vision, 401k, long-term disability, PTO and 10.5 paid holidays.
Salary:
  • $55,000 - $80,000
