Position Summary
We are looking for a Database Engineer Intern for our San Diego-based corporate office. The SHEIN DBRE team is a mix of DBA/SRE/DBRE oriented folks whose overarching goal is to provide highly available data services at scale. They strive to build an extremely reliable, performant, and secure database infrastructure through the skillful use of automation. This team is responsible for providing new architectures and scalability solutions to ever-growing business and data processing needs.
Our ideal candidate has a strong understanding of database fundamentals and how the properties of different database systems interact with applications and operating systems. You will be working onsite on a distributed team, with access to multiple customer environments.
Job Responsibilities
  • Maintaining scalable, reliable, and robust production database environments.
  • Monitoring for problems and diagnosing and addressing those problems as needed.
  • Performance tuning, query optimization, and index tuning.
  • Building database tools and scripts to simplify, automate, to reduce operation toil.
  • Responsible for working with development teams and engineers to provide a database design guidance.
  • Handle Database upgrades and migrations, while monitoring and improving database performance.
  • Triage and solve database issues, drive incidents until resolution and employ measures to prevent recurrence.
  • Do capacity planning benchmarking on various databases.
  • Provide assessments of data integrity, high availability, data security, and privacy.

Job Requirements
  • This role is applicable only to 2026 graduates (the graduation date must be prior to November 1, 2026).
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Information Systems or equivalent technical discipline.
  • MySQL specific database experience.
  • Experience using Azure or any other cloud provider.
  • A solid understanding of distributed/replicated database topologies.
  • Systematic problem-solving approach, combined with a sense of ownership and drive.
  • Track record monitoring and analyzing system performance, isolating issues or bottlenecks that could impact reliability, performance and scalability.
  • Good understanding of Linux system, ability to deploy open-source software independently.
  • Proficient in more than one scripting language (golang/python/shell, etc.).
  • A strong desire to be challenged by problems of scale and complexity to make our service better for our customers.
  • The ability to remain calm in the face of extreme crises. Good verbal and written communication skills, and be able to work effectively with geographically remote teams.

AI Competency Requirements (Junior MySQL Operations Engineer)
  • Familiar with mainstream AI coding assistants (e.g., Claude Code, ChatGPT, Gemini) and able to leverage them for day-to-day operations tasks such as SQL optimization suggestions, troubleshooting, and documentation generation.
  • Capable of writing effective prompts and iteratively refining them based on model outputs.
  • Aware of AI model limitations and maintains a habit of manually validating results.
  • Has hands-on experience using AI tools to address real MySQL operations scenarios, such as slow query analysis, parameter tuning recommendations, and incident diagnosis assistance.
  • Understands the fundamentals of RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) and is able to structure database operations knowledge into AI-consumable formats, such as knowledge bases, tuning case libraries, and FAQ documents.
  • Has exposure to AI application frameworks such as LangChain or LlamaIndex, or has basic experience with vector databases (e.g., Qdrant, pgvector).
  • Understands the basics of MCP (Model Context Protocol) integration and is familiar with how AI Agents interact with external tools Maintains a habit of organizing day-to-day operations experience into structured documents or prompt templates for team-wide sharing and reuse.

Nice to Have
  • Fluency in Mandarin
  • Experience managing MySQL / Percona Server 8 at scale.
  • Experience managing distributed database, like Clickhouse, Hbase, MongoDB and Starrocks etc.
  • Experience with Percona tools, Orchestrator, Ghost etc.
