Purpose of Position
As a Manager, Software Engineering (Database), you will lead the strategy, administration, modernization, and operational excellence of NetJets' enterprise database platforms. This role combines technical database leadership with people management responsibilities, ensuring the delivery of secure, highly available, high-performing database solutions that support mission-critical business applications and global operations. You will be responsible for managing a team of database administrators and engineers while driving innovation, automation, cloud adoption, database architecture, and operational resilience across Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and cloud-based database technologies.
Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Hire, lead, mentor, and manage the performance of database administrators and database engineering resources to achieve operational and project delivery objectives.
  • Coach and develop team members through ongoing feedback, technical guidance, career planning, and skills development.
  • Ensure the team possesses the technical capabilities required to support enterprise database platforms through hiring, training, and upskilling initiatives.
  • Lead the installation, configuration, patching, upgrading, administration, and performance tuning of Oracle, MS SQL Server, and related database technologies.
  • Define and execute database architecture strategies that improve scalability, security, reliability, maintainability, and performance.
  • Design and manage highly available database solutions including Oracle RAC, Oracle Data Guard, SQL Server Always On, clustering technologies, and disaster recovery environments.
  • Establish and maintain enterprise backup, recovery, and business continuity strategies utilizing technologies such as RMAN and other enterprise backup solutions.
  • Drive database modernization initiatives including cloud migration, automation, observability, and database platform optimization.
  • Lead database development and infrastructure projects while providing technical guidance on emerging technologies and best practices.
  • Create and mature testing and automation frameworks, including infrastructure automation, database deployment automation, CI/CD integration, code scanning, monitoring, and operational health checks.
  • Collaborate with software engineering, architecture, cybersecurity, infrastructure, and business teams to deliver enterprise technology solutions.
  • Influence technical direction and architecture decisions for database platforms supporting critical business applications.
  • Ensure proper prioritization of business value, operational stability, technology hygiene, compliance, and risk management.
  • Accountable for the resilience, stability, performance, and technical health of enterprise database environments.
  • Develop and maintain database monitoring, alerting, capacity planning, and performance management processes.
  • Support mission-critical 24x7 operations while fostering a culture of continuous improvement focused on reducing incidents and increasing platform reliability.
  • Manage relationships with technology vendors, consultants, and service providers, ensuring adherence to contractual commitments and NetJets standards.
  • Communicate technical strategies, risks, performance metrics, and operational plans to leadership and executive stakeholders.

  • 8-10+ years of experience administering and engineering Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server database environments.
  • Preferred certifications may include: Oracle Certified Professional (OCP), Azure Database Administrator Associate, AWS Certified Database Specialty, ITIL Foundation Certification
  • Previous leadership experience managing database administration, database engineering, or infrastructure teams within medium to large enterprise environments.
  • Extensive experience supporting Oracle and SQL Server on Windows, UNIX, AIX, and Linux platforms.
  • Strong expertise with High Availability and Disaster Recovery solutions including Oracle RAC, Oracle Data Guard, SQL Server Always On, and clustering technologies.
  • Advanced experience implementing and managing standby databases and disaster recovery architectures.
  • Deep understanding of enterprise backup and recovery solutions, including RMAN and related technologies.
  • Expert-level SQL, PL/SQL, PowerShell, and Unix shell scripting skills.
  • Experience with automation, Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD pipelines, testing automation, and operational excellence practices.
  • Demonstrated success in database performance tuning, optimization, troubleshooting, and capacity planning.
  • Experience with enterprise database monitoring and observability platforms.
  • Knowledge of logical and physical database design principles and best practices.
  • Experience with Oracle Exadata, Oracle GoldenGate, IBM DB2, and replication technologies is preferred.
  • Experience with cloud database platforms and services including Amazon RDS, Amazon Aurora, Amazon Redshift, Snowflake, AWS Database Migration Service, and cloud storage solutions.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, project management, and decision-making skills.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present technical concepts to executive and non-technical audiences.
