What is a database developer?

A database developer works in an Information Technology (IT) department creating and maintaining databases. You monitor and troubleshoot databases and run debugging processes. Responsibilities can include offering support to other departments or clients, updating systems, advising management on tech solutions and security, and managing machine data. You use computers, cloud data, applications, and programs to improve processes and streamline coding strategies. You may also have duties like presenting information to clients or upper management, and proposing and enacting system updates.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a database developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Database Developer, you need expertise in database design, SQL programming, and data modeling, typically backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with relational database management systems (such as SQL Server, Oracle, or MySQL), ETL tools, and relevant certifications like Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with stakeholders and troubleshoot issues efficiently. These skills ensure the development of robust, scalable, and secure database solutions that support organizational data needs.

What are some common challenges faced by database developers when working on large-scale projects?

Database Developers working on large-scale projects often encounter challenges such as optimizing query performance, ensuring data integrity, and managing database scalability. As databases grow, maintaining efficient indexing, handling concurrent access, and implementing robust backup and recovery strategies become increasingly complex. Collaboration with application developers and system administrators is essential to ensure smooth integration and to address issues related to data migration and security. Staying updated with the latest database technologies and best practices can help mitigate these challenges and contribute to project success.

This individual must have strong database engineering and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced and high-volume database environment in GCP managed databases (Cloud SQL Postgres, Memorystore for Redis/Valkey, AlloyDB, Spanner, BigQuery). The Senior DBA will play a critical role in administering, maintaining, optimizing, and supporting our database systems, ensuring data integrity, performance, and availability. This includes working on both physical and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) native infrastructures. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with Postgres Server and working with modern cloud-native database solutions such as GCP CloudSQL PostgreSQL, Redis and BigQuery. In addition to hands-on technical expertise, the role also requires strong collaboration skills, operational support, and contributions to strategic database initiatives. Furthermore, the Senior DBA is expected to embrace DevOps practices by automating database operations, implementing Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) for provisioning and maintaining database environments, managing CI/CD pipelines for database changes, monitoring and alerting using modern tools, and collaborating closely with engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of database systems within the software development lifecycle. A proactive mindset towards continuous improvement, scalability, and reliability in line with DevOps principles is key to succeeding in this role.
Duties/Responsibilities
  • Administer and optimize high-volume MongoDB and PostgreSQL systems (including Cloud SQL) in highly available environments.
  • Design and own Terraform modules for GCP databases: Cloud SQL (PostgreSQL), Memorystore (Redis/Valkey), AlloyDB, Spanner, and BigQuery.
  • Manage large transactional replication with low-latency delivery; use BigQuery as a replication target and tune performance/cost.
  • Implement database changes via IaC (Terraform with GitHub PRs) following performance, security, and reliability best practices.
  • Establish backup/restore, PITR, HA/failover testing, DR runbooks, and an overall database support plan.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams on schema reviews, query optimization, and BigQuery governance.
  • Handle security and audit tasks; respond to support requests and data change needs promptly.
  • Support incident response and participate in on-call rotations (including off-hours, Central Time) and scheduled maintenance such as patching, large data scripts, VLDB index work, and DR testing.

Education and/or Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering (or equivalent work experience) required
  • 8+ years of prior work experience
  • Experience in administering and optimizing MongoDB, PostgreSQL Server environments, including expertise in transactional replication.
  • Experience with GCP CloudSQL PostgreSQL and knowledge of PostgreSQL database management.
  • Experience in Memorystore for Redis, AlloyDB, Spanner and BigQuery preferred.
  • Experience with other cloud-based database technologies or platforms, such as Azure SQL or AWS RDS, preferred.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform and version control systems like GitHub for managing database infrastructure changes.
  • Experience with high-availability architectures, disaster recovery planning, and execution.

Required Skills/Abilities
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with attention to detail.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Expertise in Memorystore for Redis, AlloyDB, Spanner and BigQuery preffered.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based database systems, preferably Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Familiarity with DevOps methodologies, Terraform and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Knowledge of GCP BigQuery, including performance tuning and administrative capabilities.
  • Knowledge of programming and scripting knowledge for automation.
  • Willingness to provide on-call and off-hours technical support as required.
