Job description

Description:

XTIVIA - Part-time Weekend SQL Server DBA

Work Location Remote (U.S. Based)

Duration Part-time, Saturdays (17 hours/week)
Status Non-Exempt
How you will make a difference
We are looking for a Jr-level SQL Server DBA to join XTIVIA’s support team. This role is built specifically for high-density weekend coverage, ensuring our customers' production workloads stay online, optimized, and secure while the weekday team is off.
You will connect to multiple clients, handle live screen-share sessions, and troubleshoot issues on the fly. You need to be comfortable dealing with everything from sudden tempdb contention to fixing broken replication while keeping the customer calm and informed.
What you will be doing

  • Urgent Response: Acting as the first line of defense for critical SQL Server Agent alerts, severity errors, and urgent customer calls regarding issues with their SQL Server systems.
  • Weekend Operations: Executing scheduled maintenance windows, including applying Cumulative Updates (CUs), managing index/statistics rebuilds, running DBCC CHECKDB, and safely deploying schema changes.
  • Clearing the Queue: Working through the ticket backlog and picking up specific handoffs, such as monitoring a long-running migration, from the weekday DBA team.
  • Staying Connected: Since this is a remote role, you will need to manage your own time, stay proactive, and communicate clearly in our team channels throughout your shift.
  • Admin Tasks: Accurately recording ticket and timesheet entries for client billing.
The Schedule

This is a part-time role requiring a total of 17 hours per week. You must be comfortable working a 13-hour weekend shift.

  • Friday: Up to 2 hours of preparation
  • Saturday: 8:00 AM - 9:00 PM Mountain Time
  • Sunday: Up to 2 hours for handoff

There may also be opportunities to cover the other weekend shift when the team member assigned to that shift is out or unavailable.

Requirements:

What you bring to your new team

  • Experience: 2-5 years working as a production support SQL Server DBA.
  • Platform Knowledge: Hands-on experience administering SQL Server 2012 through 2025, including instance-level best practices (MAXDOP, cost threshold, max server memory) and security protocols.
  • T-SQL & Performance Tuning: Ability to write T-SQL from scratch and read execution plans. You should be able to identify parameter sniffing, resolve deadlocks, and rewrite poorly performing queries, stored procedures, and triggers.
  • Core DBA Tasks: A solid grasp of native backups and point-in-time restores, database file management, and patching instances.
  • High Availability: Practical experience building, troubleshooting, and failing over Always On Availability Groups (AGs) and Windows Server Failover Clusters (WSFC).
  • Data Integration: Familiarity with deploying, executing, and troubleshooting SSIS packages.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written skills with the ability to explain complex engine behaviors and root-cause analyses clearly to non-DBA clients.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.

How you add even MORE value

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills typically acquired through an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or through relevant professional experience.
  • Experience migrating or managing SQL Server workloads in the Cloud (AWS RDS/EC2 or Azure SQL/Managed Instance).
  • Active Microsoft Certifications (e.g., Azure Data Fundamentals, Azure Database Administrator Associate).
  • Experience configuring and deploying SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
  • A background in technical support or call center support.
