Job description

ROLE: Senior Developer, Data Engineering - 6 Months Contract

REPORTS TO: Manager, Digital Analytics

LOCATION: Hybrid / Corporate Office in Richmond Hill, Ontario

SALARY: $60/h - $80/h

THE OPPORTUNITY

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Developer to join our Data Engineering team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data engineering, with a focus on data modelling, and ensuring data quality. You will work closely with analysts, other stakeholders, and be expected to start making meaningful contributions very quickly.

Venterra is currently pursuing a data stack modernization effort to migrate from traditional ETL tools including Informatica and SSIS with SQL Server to a cloud-native ELT stack built on AWS, Python, Airflow, DBT, and Snowflake.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Migrate data models from SQL Server to Snowflake with little oversight.
  • Implement data quality checks and monitoring to ensure the accuracy and reliability of data.
  • Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to understand data requirements and deliver solutions that meet their needs.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for data engineering processes and systems.
  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable data pipelines and ETL processes to support data integration and analytics.
  • Stay up to date with the latest industry trends and technologies in data engineering and recommend improvements to existing systems.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, Engineering, a related field or equivalent experience
  • 7+ years of experience in data engineering or a related field.
  • Strong expertise in SQL and experience with relational databases, Snowflake and Microsoft SQL Server with an emphasis on analytical and ETL use cases.
  • Strong programming skills in Python.
  • Experience with Apache Airflow and being able to design, develop, and maintain scalable data transformation workflows using data build tool (DBT).
  • Knowledge of dimensional modelling techniques and data warehouse schema design.
  • Strong experience building cloud-native solutions using AWS Lambda, ECS and EMR and deploying these services using infrastructure as code via Terraform.
  • Experience working with Git, CI/CD pipelines for database schema evolution and environment management.
  • Experience with big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark) is a plus.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with data modeling and schema design.
  • Knowledge of data governance and data security best practices.
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Familiarity with machine learning and data science concepts.
