Understanding these differences helps organizations assign the right skills to optimize database performance and reliability.

What are Database Automation Engineers?

Database Automation Engineers are IT professionals who design, implement, and manage automated processes to streamline database operations. Their primary goal is to reduce manual intervention by leveraging scripting, tools, and technologies such as DevOps pipelines, configuration management, and monitoring solutions. They ensure databases are efficiently deployed, maintained, and monitored for performance and reliability, often collaborating with database administrators and development teams. This role requires a strong understanding of database systems, automation tools, and programming languages.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Database Automation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Database Automation Engineer, you need expertise in database management, scripting languages (such as Python or PowerShell), and a solid understanding of automation processes, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with database platforms (like MySQL, SQL Server, or Oracle), automation tools (such as Ansible or Jenkins), and certifications like Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate are typically beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring efficient, reliable, and scalable database operations in complex, data-driven environments.

How does a Database Automation Engineer typically collaborate with development and operations teams?

Database Automation Engineers work closely with both development and operations teams to streamline database deployment, management, and monitoring. They often design automated workflows for database provisioning, backups, and updates, ensuring that developers have reliable access to data while minimizing downtime. Collaboration includes participating in DevOps initiatives, supporting CI/CD pipelines, and troubleshooting performance issues alongside other team members. This cross-functional teamwork helps maintain database reliability and supports rapid delivery cycles.

Job description

As MISO's Senior SQL Database Administrator, you will be responsible for designing, installing, monitoring, maintenance, security, and performance tuning of enterprise-class databases, including Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and Postgres. You will also be responsible for ensuring the availability, reliability, and optimal performance of both critical and non-critical corporate data systems. You will play a key part in protecting and enhancing MISO's data environment by proactively managing databases and implementing best-practice standards. Additionally, you'll collaborate closely with teams across the organization to understand their data requirements and ensure that corporate information remains accurate, secure, and trusted.
As MISO's Senior SQL Database Administrator you will:
  • Build, configure, and administer complex database platforms (primarily SQL Server and Azure SQL, with support for Oracle, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB in a highly available, mission-critical environment).
  • Proactively monitor database performance and system health using tools like SolarWinds; identify and resolve bottlenecks through advanced query tuning, indexing strategies, execution plan analysis, and physical database design improvements.
  • Design, implement, and maintain high-availability and disaster recovery solutions, including SQL Server Always On and clustering, ensuring stability and resilience for critical systems such as control-room applications.
  • Manage the full database lifecycle, including installation, configuration, patching (Windows and SQL), upgrades, backup/recovery, security hardening, compliance, and decommissioning.
  • Automate administrative and operational tasks using PowerShell and best-practice automation frameworks to improve efficiency and consistency.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and application stakeholders to understand data requirements, ensure database reliability, and serve as a go-to technical expert for SQL Server-related questions and support.
  • Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation, providing responsive production support and ensuring ongoing stability across all supported database platforms.

To be successful as our Senior SQL Database Administrator, we are looking for the following:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, (or 10 years relevant work experience equivalency, preferred)
  • At least six years of related Information Technology experience (required)
  • Experience building, configuring, and administering complex SQL Server databases, including high-availability architecture such as Always On availability groups and clustering
  • SQL Server on Azure
  • PowerShell and automation best practices for efficient administration, patching, reporting, and operational tasks.
  • Oracle Database exposure

Appropriate level will be determined based upon experience and knowledge.
