What is data tagging?

A Data Tagging job involves labeling or annotating data, such as text, images, audio, or video, to help machine learning models understand patterns and make accurate predictions. Taggers assign relevant metadata, categories, or identifiers to raw data based on predefined guidelines. This process is essential for training AI systems in tasks like image recognition, natural language processing, and content moderation. Attention to detail and consistency are critical in ensuring high-quality, accurate datasets for AI models.

What does a data tagger do?

A typical day for a Data Tagging professional involves reviewing large volumes of data—such as images, video clips, audio, or text—and applying specific labels or annotations according to detailed project guidelines. You’ll likely work with specialized software platforms and may be part of a collaborative team that regularly coordinates to ensure consistency and accuracy. Frequent communication with project managers or data scientists is common to clarify criteria or resolve ambiguities. While the work can be repetitive, it is crucial for the development of AI and machine learning applications, and there are often opportunities to progress into quality assurance, project coordination, or more technical data roles over time.

What skills and qualifications are needed for data tagging?

To excel in a Data Tagging role, attention to detail, consistency, and a basic understanding of data categorization or annotation are essential, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with specialized annotation software or data labeling platforms, as well as basic computer literacy, is typically required. Strong time management, communication skills, and the ability to follow detailed instructions help candidates stand out. These abilities ensure that tagged data is accurate, reliable, and ready for use in training machine learning models or improving data-driven processes.

Job description

POSITION OVERVIEW: You're a Data Analyst who loves building insightful dashboards as much as you do finding the story buried within them.
You're comfortable in the numbers, but you don't live there. You live in the "what does it mean" - the insights that turn performance data into a recommendation clients can actually act on. You're as fluent in measurement frameworks as you are in a strategy conversation, and you know how to make complex analysis feel clear without making it simple.
As a Data Analyst, you'll work within our Media department as a key partner to the Director of Digital Media, Account Service, and creative teams. You'll analyze cross-channel performance data, identify trends and opportunities, guide measurement frameworks, and support the tracking and reporting solutions that give clients a smarter picture of what's working - and why.
If you're an analytical mind with strategic instincts who wants to put them to work somewhere that values both, let's talk.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Data Analysis, Reporting & Insights
  • Collaborate with media team members to design and maintain automated dashboards (e.g., TapClicks, NinjaCat, Google Data Studio) that clearly communicate performance, insights and opportunities to internal teams and clients.
  • Analyze performance data across paid media channels (search, social, programmatic, etc.), owned channels (email, social, etc.), and web analytics platforms.
  • Develop insights that drive campaign optimization, budget allocation, audience strategy, and creative testing strategy.
  • Identify trends, performance anomalies, and growth opportunities.

Measurement & Tracking Implementation
  • Collaborate with Shine's in-house web development team and client teams to implement and validate tracking solutions (GA4, GTM, media platform pixels, conversion APIs, server-side analytics platforms, etc.).
  • Ensure proper data collection architecture across client websites and landing pages.
  • Troubleshoot data discrepancies and tracking issues.
  • Maintain documentation of measurement frameworks and tagging structures.

Strategic Collaboration
  • Partner with account service to align data insights with client KPIs and business objectives.
  • Support development of test-and-learn agendas, measurement plans, and quarterly business reviews.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
  • 3-5+ years of experience in digital marketing analytics, media analytics, or a similar role (agency experience preferred).
  • Strong proficiency in web analytics platforms (GA4 required).
  • Experience with tag management systems (Google Tag Manager preferred).
  • Experience with data visualization tools (TapClicks preferred).
  • Working knowledge of paid media platforms (Google Ads, Meta, LinkedIn, programmatic DSPs) and corresponding conversion APIs where applicable.
  • Ability to synthesize data into clear, actionable insights for non-technical audiences.
  • Understanding of attribution models and incrementality testing.
  • Experience with server-side analytics platforms.
  • Exposure to marketing mix modeling or advanced analytics frameworks.

Preferred:
  • Experience with SQL and/or Python for data analysis, including implementation of Meridian
  • Familiarity with CRM data integration and customer journey analysis.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: Competitive salary based on experience. Benefits package includes: fully paid health, dental, life and disability insurance (for individuals and families), 401k program, paid downtown parking, paid home internet access, and more.
