Job description

Overview
The Medical Scientist Trainee Program (MSTP) trains future physicians to conduct research to advance the understanding of human health and disease. The program will educate participants on methods to study the underlying causes of disease, as well as to develop new treatments and therapies.
Responsibilities
12-month Research Immersion
  • Students are expected to spend 40 hours per week in the laboratory or working on research-related activities. The Research Advisor will guide the student's research activities and reading of relevant literature. The student will contribute to ongoing projects in the laboratory, increasing possibility for scientific skill development and publication.
  • Students will attend journal clubs and research seminars at WHIT. Students are encouraged to present their research findings as active participants in the WHIT Research in Progress seminar.
  • Students will enroll in two courses during the Research Year, one in the Spring and one in the fall, as follows: Foundations of Medical Science and Research- 6 Credits and Medical Science -6 Credits

Medical Scientist Trainee Responsibilities & Duties (under the direction of a Research Faculty member)
  • Conduct experiments and studies to understand diseases and develop medical solutions
  • Analyze medical samples and data to identify patterns and correlations
  • Develop hypotheses and design research methodologies
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals, statisticians, and other researchers
  • Publish research findings in scientific journals
  • Apply for research grants and secure funding
  • Mentor and supervise junior researchers and laboratory technicians
  • Present research findings at conferences and symposiums
  • Ensure compliance with ethical standards and safety regulations
  • Evaluate the efficacy and safety of new drugs and medical treatments
  • Utilize advanced laboratory equipment and software for data analysis
  • Integrate new technologies and methodologies into research practices

Qualifications
Education/Experience
  • Must be an MSTP Award Recipient and a current TouroCOM student in in the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree Program
  • Must be in good academic standing
  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours during each fall and spring semester
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of molecular biology techniques
  • Experience in clinical or laboratory research
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
  • Leadership experience in a research or lab setting
  • Strong communication skills for presenting complex data
  • In-depth knowledge of research methods and protocols
  • Proven ability to manage complex research projects
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety procedures
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a team and independently
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements and ethical guidelines
