What is the difference between Data Science vs Data Analyst?
| Aspect | Data Science | Data Analyst |
|---|---|---|
| Required skills | Statistics, programming (Python, R), machine learning | Data visualization, SQL, basic statistics |
| Work environment | Developing models, predictive analytics, research | Reporting, data cleaning, descriptive analysis |
| Tools used | Python, R, Jupyter, TensorFlow | Excel, SQL, Tableau, Power BI |
| Industry usage | Tech, finance, healthcare, e-commerce | Retail, marketing, finance, healthcare |
Data Science and Data Analyst roles often overlap but differ mainly in scope. Data Scientists focus on building predictive models and advanced analytics, requiring programming and machine learning skills. Data Analysts primarily handle data cleaning, reporting, and visualization. Both roles are essential in data-driven industries, but Data Science is more technical and research-oriented, while Data Analysis emphasizes interpreting data for business insights.

As the Sr. Manager – Data Architecture & Governance, you will lead the design, implementation, and optimization of ITW Welding companies’ enterprise data systems, ensuring they are robust, scalable, cost-effective, and aligned with governance standards. This role focuses on data architecture first, establishing the structure, integration, and accessibility of enterprise data, while implementing governance policies that ensure data is accurate, secure, properly retained, and optimized for both business value and operational efficiency.
This is a highly visible role requiring strategic leadership, operational excellence, and a vision for data-driven insights. You will oversee the architecture of master data, cloud platforms, and integrations, while enabling analytics and reporting teams to access and leverage high-quality data effectively, with attention to cost efficiency and retention practices.
Essential Functions
Lead the enterprise data architecture strategy, including Master Data Management (MDM), Azure Data Lake, Microsoft Fabric, and integrations to Dynamics 365.
Establish and enforce data governance policies and standards, including data retention, quality, and cost optimization practices, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, corporate goals, and industry best practices.
Ensure data quality, accessibility, and usability for reporting and analytics, collaborating with Data Analytics and BI teams to enable accurate, timely insights.
Define and monitor data retention schedules and lifecycle management processes to optimize storage costs and maintain regulatory compliance.
Assess and grow the talent and skillset of the Data team, establishing standards, roadmaps, and governance processes.
Define data integration, storage, and access strategies that support current and future business needs while optimizing total cost of ownership.
Oversee project schedules, resource allocation, and budgets for data architecture and governance initiatives.
Ensure compliance with SOX, data privacy regulations, and software licensing requirements.
Advocate for and enforce security best practices across data systems and related business applications.
Serve as a subject matter expert in modern data architecture, cloud infrastructure, Microsoft Fabric, and Microsoft reporting ecosystems.
Foster a culture of data ownership, accountability, cost-consciousness, and process simplification across the organization.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Business, IT, Computer Science, or a related field.
5–7 years of experience in data architecture, enterprise data governance, MDM, or related areas.
3–5 years of direct management experience, leading teams of 3 or more.
Proven experience designing and implementing enterprise data architecture strategies and governance frameworks.
Knowledge of Microsoft Power BI, Azure Data Lake, Microsoft Fabric, Dynamics 365, or other enterprise data platforms.
Experience implementing cloud infrastructure, managing integrations, and optimizing costs associated with data storage and management.
Familiarity with Agile/Scrum environments and project management best practices.
