Data Science Visualization information

What is Data Science Visualization?

Data Science Visualization refers to the practice of creating graphical representations of data and analytical results to make complex information more understandable and actionable. Data visualization helps data scientists communicate insights, identify patterns, and inform decision-making by presenting data in charts, graphs, maps, and interactive dashboards. It bridges the gap between technical analyses and non-technical stakeholders, enabling clearer communication and more effective storytelling with data.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Science Visualization specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive in Data Science Visualization, you need a strong grasp of data analysis, statistics, and data storytelling, often supported by a degree in computer science, statistics, or a related field. Proficiency with visualization tools like Tableau, Power BI, or D3.js as well as programming languages such as Python or R is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for translating complex data into clear, actionable visuals. These skills are crucial for transforming raw data into insights that drive informed business decisions.

What is the difference between Data Science Visualization vs Data Analyst?

AspectData Science VisualizationData Analyst
Required SkillsData visualization tools, programming (Python, R), statistical knowledgeExcel, SQL, basic statistics, data reporting
Work EnvironmentData science teams, research projects, advanced analyticsBusiness units, reporting, data cleaning
Industry UsageTech, finance, healthcare, researchRetail, marketing, finance, operations

Data Science Visualization focuses on creating advanced visual representations of complex data sets using programming and statistical tools, often within data science teams. Data Analysts primarily generate reports and dashboards using tools like Excel and SQL for business decision-making. While both roles involve data visualization, Data Science Visualization emphasizes technical, programming-based visualizations for in-depth analysis, whereas Data Analysts focus on accessible reports for business insights.

How does a Data Science Visualization specialist typically collaborate with data scientists and other stakeholders during a project?

Data Science Visualization specialists play a key role in bridging the gap between complex data analysis and actionable insights. They often work closely with data scientists to understand the underlying data models and results, and then collaborate with business stakeholders to ensure visualizations are tailored to the audience's needs. Regular meetings, feedback sessions, and iterative design processes are common, enabling effective communication and ensuring that visual outputs are both accurate and impactful. This collaborative environment helps ensure that data-driven insights are easily understood and used for decision-making across the organization.

Location: ย This position may be performed remotely, but requires the flexibility and willingness to travel as needed.

The Opportunity

Praxis is seeking an Associate Director,ย Statisticalย Data Scientistย toย lead and execute the development, validation and automation of analytical pipelines and statistical models that support metadata-driven clinical data processing, reporting, and regulatory submissions.ย

This is a hands-on technical leadership role, idealย forย a seniorย data scientist or statistical programmerย who enjoys coding, problem-solving, and working cross-functionally to bring rigor, reproducibility,ย and automation to clinical reporting workflows.ย

The Associate Director will contribute directly to R/Python development while also setting technical standards, mentoring peers, and ensuring readiness for R-based regulatory submissions.ย

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and validation of R/Python code to automate generation ofย analyticalย datasets and TLFs within a metadata-driven pipeline.ย
  • Translate SAPs and metadata specifications (YAML/CSV) into executable and reproducible code.ย
  • Build andย validateย R packagesย and data science tools supporting both exploratory and confirmatory analyses, ensuring full traceability and audit readiness.ย
  • Implement and validateย statisticallย models (e.g., MMRM, ANCOVA, logistic regression) using R packages such asย mmrm,ย emmeans.ย
  • Collaborate with IT to integrateย data science and statistical programming workflowsย within Databricks and CI/CD pipelines for continuous validation and reproducibilityย
  • Collaborate across programming, biostatistics, and data standardsย functionsย toย ensure dataset definitions, derivations, and metadata align with controlled standards.ย
  • Conductย peerย code reviews, unit testing, and automated validation; ensuring deliverables meet submission-qualityย and reproducibilityย standardsย
  • Mentor and guide team members in best practices for programming, validation, and automationย ย

Qualifications and Key Success Factors

  • Bachelor's orย Master'sย degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Data Science,ย orย a relatedย field.ย
  • 8+ย years of statistical programming experienceย in the pharmaceutical/biotechย industyย including hands-on experience with R and/or Python.ย
  • Proven experience preparing or supporting R-based regulatory submissions (e.g., R package validation, R-based analysis delivery, or submission readiness)ย
  • Strong understanding of CDISCย ADaMย and SDTM data structures, and their use in analytical workflowsย
  • Experience developing andย validatingย reusable R/Python libraries and functionsย
  • Proficiencyย with Git, Bitbucket, and CI/CD automation pipelinesย
  • Working knowledge ofย GxPย and Part 11 complianceย
  • Excellent documentation and validation practicesย
  • Collaborative and proactive mindset; able toย operateย independently in a small, agile team.ย

Preferred Experience:ย

  • Familiarity with YAML/JSON configuration and metadata-driven programming workflowsย
  • Prior experience migrating from SAS to R/Python environmentsย
  • Knowledge of R validation frameworks (e.g., risk-based testing, reproducibility documentation).ย
  • Experience with exploratory analytics or visualization in R or Python within a regulated framework.ย

The physical and mental requirements of our roles include but are not limited to regular use of a computer, devices or other office equipment, clear communication, and occasional movement.ย  You'll need comfort with screen work, basic hand coordination, and focus. ย Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these functions.
