How do I get a job in data science training with no experience?

To get a job in data science training with no experience, focus on building foundational knowledge through online courses, certifications, and practical projects. Developing strong communication skills and familiarity with tools like Python, R, or SQL can also improve your chances, and gaining experience through internships or volunteering can help demonstrate your expertise to employers.

What is data science training?

A Data Science Training job involves teaching and guiding individuals or teams in data science concepts, tools, and techniques. Trainers design curricula, conduct workshops, and provide hands-on experience with programming languages like Python or R, machine learning, and data visualization. They may work for educational institutions, corporate training programs, or independently to upskill professionals. The goal is to equip learners with the skills needed to analyze data, build models, and make data-driven decisions.

What training do you need to be a data scientist?

To become a data scientist, you typically need a strong foundation in mathematics, statistics, and programming, often gained through a bachelor's degree in a related field such as computer science, mathematics, or engineering. Many data scientists also pursue advanced degrees like a master's or Ph.D., and proficiency in tools such as Python, R, SQL, and machine learning frameworks is essential. Additionally, practical experience through projects, internships, or certifications can enhance job prospects.

What are the typical responsibilities of a professional in data science training?

Individuals in Data Science Training roles are responsible for developing, organizing, and delivering curriculum on topics such as data analysis, machine learning, and data visualization. They often lead workshops, create interactive tutorials, and provide one-on-one guidance to learners from diverse backgrounds. Collaboration with data science teams and subject matter experts to ensure training content is current and industry-relevant is common. Additionally, professionals assess learner progress and adapt materials to continuously improve the educational experience. This role is ideal for those passionate about teaching and staying at the forefront of new data science advancements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in data science training, and why are they important?

To excel in Data Science Training roles, you need a solid foundation in data analysis, statistical modeling, and expertise with programming languages like Python or R, often supported by a degree in data science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Jupyter Notebooks, SQL, machine learning platforms, and certifications like Google Data Analytics or Microsoft Certified: Data Scientist Associate are highly valued. Excellent communication, patience, and instructional skills help convey complex topics clearly and foster a collaborative learning environment. These combined skills are essential for effectively designing and delivering training that empowers learners to succeed in the rapidly evolving field of data science.

Your Impact:

The Director of Data and Operations will lead a global team responsible for OpenText's enterprise data platforms, data operations and data governance functions. This leader will be accountable for building and scaling foundational enterprise data capabilities enabling trusted, governed, and AI-ready data. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise in Microsoft Fabric, the Medallion Architecture, and Agile delivery practices, with a proven track record of implementing scalable data platforms and enabling AI/ML solutions through strong data foundations.

This role requires a hands-on leader who can drive the design and execution of metadata-driven ingestion frameworks, orchestrate the transformation of raw data into curated, analytics-ready assets, and ensure operational excellence across the data lifecycle. The Director will partner closely with business and technology stakeholders to prioritize delivery, enforce governance, and accelerate the development of AI-enabled data products. Experience with deploying data science models and integrating LLMs into enterprise workflows is highly desirable.

What the role offers:

As a Director, Data & Operations you will:

  • Lead the global Data Platforms and Operations organization, including data platform, data governance, and data operations teams.
  • Own the implementation, and evolution of OpenText's Fabric-based data platform, including medallion architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold).
  • Drive the development of metadata-driven ingestion and transformation frameworks to support scalable, governed data pipelines.
  • Establish and enforce enterprise data governance policies, including data quality, lineage, access control, and certification of Gold datasets.
  • Partner with business and product teams to prioritize data domain onboarding and deliver trusted, AI-ready data products.
  • Enable AI and data science teams by ensuring data is curated, accessible, and aligned with model training and inference needs.
  • Champion Agile delivery practices and lead the adoption of SAFe-aligned ways of working across the data organization.
  • Collaborate with security, compliance, and architecture teams to ensure platform resilience, privacy, and regulatory alignment.

What you need to succeed:

  • 10+ years of experience in data platform, data operations, or Data and Operations leadership roles, with at least 3 years leading global teams.
  • Proven experience implementing enterprise-scale data platforms using Microsoft Fabric, Azure Synapse, or similar cloud-native architectures.
  • Deep understanding of the Medallion Architecture and experience operationalizing Bronze, Silver, and Gold data layers.
  • Hands-on experience with data science workflows, including enabling ML/AI models and integrating LLMs into enterprise applications.
  • Strong knowledge of Agile delivery frameworks; SAFe certification is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams, manage complex programs, and deliver measurable business outcomes.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts into business value.
