What is a Data Science Physics?

A Data Science Physics job combines physics principles with data science techniques to analyze complex datasets, build predictive models, and extract insights. Professionals in this role apply statistical methods, machine learning, and computational algorithms to solve problems in areas such as material science, astrophysics, and engineering. They often work with big data, simulations, and experimental data to improve decision-making and research outcomes.

What does a Data Science Physics do?

A typical day in Data Science Physics often involves collecting, cleaning, and analyzing large datasets derived from experimental or simulated physics research. You may spend time developing and testing predictive models, interpreting results, and visualizing data to communicate findings to colleagues and stakeholders. Collaboration is common, with regular meetings alongside scientists, engineers, and data professionals to discuss project goals or troubleshoot challenges. Additionally, you may contribute to research publications or help develop new methodologies for data analysis, making each day varied and intellectually stimulating.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Data Science Physics?

To thrive in Data Science Physics, you need strong analytical abilities in both physics and statistics, typically supported by an advanced degree in physics, data science, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Python, MATLAB, machine learning libraries (e.g., scikit-learn, TensorFlow), and experience using simulation or data visualization software are essential. Excellent problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help you work effectively with multidisciplinary teams and explain complex findings to non-experts. These competencies enable efficient analysis and interpretation of large scientific datasets, driving innovation and informed decision-making in research and industry settings.

Can I get a data science job with a physics degree?

A physics degree provides a strong foundation in analytical thinking, mathematics, and problem-solving, which are valuable in data science roles. Many data scientists have backgrounds in physics, and skills in programming, statistical analysis, and data visualization tools like Python, R, and SQL are often required. Gaining experience through projects, internships, or certifications can improve job prospects in this field.

How is data science used in physics?

Data science in physics involves analyzing large datasets from experiments and simulations to identify patterns, make predictions, and develop models. Physicists use tools like machine learning, statistical analysis, and data visualization to interpret complex phenomena and advance understanding in areas such as particle physics, astrophysics, and condensed matter research.

Job description

About the Organization

Now is a great time to join Redhorse Corporation. We are a solution-driven company delivering data insights and technology solutions to customers with missions critical to U.S. national interests. We're looking for thoughtful, skilled professionals who thrive as trusted partners building technology-agnostic solutions and want to apply their talents supporting customers with difficult and important mission sets.

About the Role

Redhorse transforms the way government uses data and technology. To support this mission, we are seeking a Senior Data Scientist to support the United States Central Command (USCENTCOM) Directorate of Logistics (CCJ4) at MacDill AFB. In this role, you will play a critical part in accelerating AI-enabled capabilities for the Joint Logistics Enterprise. You will help modernize the Joint Logistics Common Operating Picture (JLOGCOP) by integrating AI/ML capabilities into dozens of automated and manual DoD data feeds. Your work will directly increase the speed of planning and enhance decision-making for missions that promote regional cooperation and deter aggression across the USCENTCOM area of responsibility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Communicate regularly with client leadership regarding enterprise values, project direction, and mission objectives.
  • Identify the intersection between strategic business value, simulation-based forecasting, and achievable technical work within the logistics domain.
  • Articulate and translate complex business questions into technical solutions using available DoD data sources and mission-level modeling outputs.
  • Explore and analyze diverse datasets—including live telemetry and simulated environments to identify meaningful entities, relationships, and trends.
  • Design and implement robust data ingestion and cleaning pipelines to ensure high-quality inputs for AI/ML models and stochastic simulations.
  • Develop applications, simulation dashboards, and effective data visualizations to communicate complex insights and scenario outcomes to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Serve as a technical ambassador for executive DoD leadership to sponsor and grow data literacy and modeling proficiency across the enterprise.
Required Experience/Clearance
  • An active Secret security clearance is required (TS/SCI eligibility preferred).
  • 8+ years of professional experience in data science, analytics, or Operations Research.
  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a quantitative discipline (Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related STEM field).
  • Proficiency in functional programming languages such as Python, R, or Scala.
  • Strong experience with Modeling & Simulation (M&S) frameworks (e.g., AFSIM, EADSIM, STORM, or similar mission-level tools).
  • Strong experience with database languages, specifically SQL.
  • Demonstrated ability to discern and apply appropriate statistical and probabilistic modeling approaches for different mission contexts.
  • Proven experience communicating key findings through technical visualizations, simulated course-of-action briefings, and technical reports.
  • Ability to work independently to recommend solutions while collaborating effectively within a cross-functional team.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% as required by the mission.
Desired Experience
  • Ph.D. in a quantitative discipline (Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, etc.).
  • Experience integrating simulation data into enterprise-level platforms (e.g., Advana, MAVEN, or C2IE).
  • Experience developing within cloud-based platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, or GovCloud).
  • Experience with large-scale data processing tools and distributed computing frameworks (e.g., Spark, Databricks).
  • Advanced experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, PowerBI, or R/Shiny).
  • Familiarity with DoD logistics data, USCENTCOM mission sets, and Joint Staff modeling requirements.

$145,000 - $165,000 a year
