Data Science New Grad information

What is a data science new grad?

Data Science New Grad roles are entry-level positions designed for recent graduates who have completed a degree in data science, computer science, statistics, or a related field. These roles typically involve working with data to analyze trends, build predictive models, and support business decision-making. New grads are expected to have foundational knowledge in programming, statistics, and machine learning, but are not required to have extensive work experience. These roles often offer mentorship and training to help new professionals grow their technical and analytical skills. Companies hire Data Science New Grads to bring fresh perspectives and to develop future data science talent.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data science new grad?

To thrive as a Data Science New Grad, you need a strong foundation in statistics, programming (typically Python or R), and data analysis, often supported by a degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related field. Familiarity with machine learning frameworks (such as TensorFlow or scikit-learn), data visualization tools, and SQL databases is highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and curiosity help new grads stand out when interpreting data and presenting insights. These competencies are crucial for transforming complex data into actionable business solutions and collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

What types of projects can a data science new grad expect to work on during their first year?

As a Data Science New Grad, you can expect to work on a variety of projects such as cleaning and preprocessing data, developing predictive models, and assisting with data visualization and reporting. You may also collaborate closely with product managers, engineers, and senior data scientists to translate business problems into analytical solutions. Early projects often focus on building foundational skills and understanding the company’s data infrastructure, while gradually increasing in complexity as you gain experience. This hands-on exposure is designed to help you grow technically and understand how data science supports organizational goals.

Job description

Overview

The Data Scientist enables advanced analytics and data-driven decision-making across the Joint Intelligence Operations Center (JIOC). This role applies scientific, statistical, and computational techniques to process, structure, and analyze large volumes of multi-source intelligence data. The Data Scientist builds and deploys AI/ML models, advanced automation solutions, and predictive analytics capabilities that enhance intelligence processes, strengthen situational awareness, and directly support operational planning and critical warfighting functions.

This position requires strong quantitative skills, experience with large and complex datasets, and the ability to collaborate with analysts, engineers, and mission partners to develop high-impact solutions that drive intelligence insight and operational advantage

Responsibilities
  • Perform complex statistical analysis, modeling, and data mining to extract actionable insights from diverse intelligence datasets.
  • Design, develop, and implement advanced data visualizations to support all aspects of JIOC intelligence operations.
  • Build and validate statistical and predictive models to identify trends, patterns, and relationships across multi-INT sources.
  • Develop and contribute to AI/ML algorithms, automation workflows, and intelligent systems that enhance mission effectiveness.
  • Conduct exploratory data analysis across internal and external datasets to support analytic findings and operational planning.
  • Create automated processes for data ingestion, conditioning, and integration to streamline intelligence production.
  • Collaborate with intelligence analysts, data engineers, and computer scientists to improve data workflows and develop new analytical capabilities.
  • Develop algorithms, scripts, and tools to automate manual processes and enhance analytic efficiency.
  • Improve data quality, searchability, metadata structures, and predictive capabilities across intelligence repositories.
  • Apply experimental design principles to test hypotheses and evaluate intelligence processes.
  • Recommend improvements to data architectures, workflows, and analytic capabilities across the enterprise.
  • Conduct system analyses to define technical requirements for new or enhanced intelligence databases and applications.
  • Identify data redundancies, gaps, and inefficiencies and develop solutions to optimize integration and accessibility.
  • Participate in intelligence planning conferences, capability development sessions, working groups, national-level coordination boards, and technical exchange meetings.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related quantitative discipline.
Required Skills
  • Advanced proficiency in multiple programming languages, analytical frameworks, and machine learning libraries.
  • Deep expertise in AI/ML, deep learning, and artificial intelligence applications.
  • Strong understanding of multi-INT fusion and large-scale intelligence analytics.
  • Demonstrated success deploying predictive models in operational or mission environments.
  • Experience developing custom analytical solutions for complex intelligence problems.
  • Advanced proficiency with cloud platforms, distributed computing, and big data systems.
  • Experience leading data science teams and mentoring junior professionals.
  • Strong understanding of intelligence enterprise requirements and mission priorities.
  • Ability to translate complex analytical results into operational recommendations.
  • Familiarity with DevOps and production deployment processes for analytic solutions.
Experience
  • Minimum of 7 to 10 years of experience in data science, analytics, or machine learning, including experience supporting defense, intelligence, or operational missions.
