Both roles are remote and in demand across various industries, but Data Science typically requires more technical skills and higher qualifications.

What are some common challenges faced by data scientists working in an international remote setting?

Data scientists working internationally and remotely often encounter challenges such as collaborating across time zones, which can make real-time communication and meetings difficult. Additionally, remote work may require extra effort to stay aligned with team goals, maintain effective data sharing, and ensure data privacy and compliance with various countries' regulations. Building strong relationships with colleagues may also take more intentional communication and proactive engagement. However, many companies support remote data scientists with robust collaboration tools and flexible work schedules to help mitigate these challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Scientist working internationally and remotely, and why are they important?

To excel as a Data Scientist in an international remote role, you need strong expertise in statistics, data analysis, and programming languages such as Python or R, typically backed by a degree in computer science, statistics, or a related field. Familiarity with machine learning frameworks, data visualization tools, and cloud-based platforms like AWS or Google Cloud is essential, and certifications in these areas can be advantageous. Outstanding communication, self-motivation, and cross-cultural collaboration skills help you effectively share insights and work with diverse teams across time zones. These competencies ensure you can independently deliver impactful data solutions while adapting to global team dynamics and remote work challenges.

What is a Data Science International Remote job?

A Data Science International Remote job involves analyzing and interpreting complex data sets to help organizations make data-driven decisions, while working from a location outside the employer's country. This role typically requires strong skills in statistics, programming, and data visualization, and may involve collaborating with global teams across different time zones. Remote data scientists often use tools like Python, R, and SQL, and must be adept at communicating insights clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. The international aspect adds the opportunity for cross-cultural collaboration and exposure to diverse data challenges.

Job description

At General Mills, we make the food the world loves. Behind every great decision is great data, and we are investing in the people, platforms, and AI capabilities that help turn insight into action.

We are hiring a Senior Data Scientist to help shape the next generation of advanced analytics and AI solutions across the enterprise. In this role, you will partner with business stakeholders, product owners, and technical teams to identify high-value opportunities, develop scalable machine learning solutions, and build reusable frameworks that strengthen how data science work gets done across General Mills.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys both building and influencing: building models, frameworks, and AI-enabled solutions, while also helping teams make smarter, faster, data-driven decisions.

What you will do
  • Partner with data science leaders, AI engineering teams, and business stakeholders to identify, prioritize, and deliver high-impact AI and machine learning use cases
  • Design, prototype, and scale advanced analytics and AI solutions using best-in-class tools and technologies
  • Frame business problems as measurable data science opportunities and translate them into practical, value-focused solutions
  • Build production-ready, reusable, and scalable models that generate timely, actionable insights
  • Work across semi-structured data use cases, including problem framing, data curation, model development, and evaluation
  • Monitor model performance, incorporate stakeholder feedback, and continuously improve solution effectiveness
  • Help define and standardize data science ways of working, including common processes, reusable assets, frameworks, and best practices
  • Communicate recommendations clearly and persuasively, helping partners understand the why behind the work and trust the path forward
  • Contribute to a strong team culture by collaborating, sharing ideas, asking questions, and supporting other data scientists
Why this role stands out
  • You will work on cutting-edge AI initiatives that are already delivering business value
  • You will help build the internal foundations, standards, and reusable frameworks that make AI adoption faster and more effective across the company
Minimum Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in data science, decision sciences, or a related quantitative field
  • Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field
  • Strong foundation in machine learning, statistical thinking, and/or analytical problem-solving
  • Strong proficiency in Python and SQL
  • Experience working with complex databases and modern data science tooling
  • Ability to spot questionable data, investigate issues, and improve the overall solution
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate business needs into technical solutions
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as GCP or similar environments
Preferred qualifications
  • Master's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field
  • Experience building large-scale AI or machine learning models
  • Some experience building AI solutions, including hands-on work with newer AI or agentic capabilities using Python or a similar programming language
  • Experience in operational or commercial business environments
  • Exposure to machine learning engineering practices and coding standards that support scalable, production-minded solutions
A strong fit for this role will bring
  • A balance of deep data science expertise and practical engineering exposure
  • Curiosity about where AI can create value and the discipline to prioritize the right use cases
  • Confidence working with ambiguity and shaping structure where it does not yet exist
  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to influence across technical and non-technical stakeholders
Additional considerations
  • International relocation and international remote working arrangements outside of the United States will not be considered
  • Candidates must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis
