What is the difference between Data Privacy vs Data Security?

AspectData PrivacyData Security
FocusProtecting personal and sensitive information from misuse and ensuring compliance with privacy lawsSafeguarding data from unauthorized access, breaches, and cyber threats
CredentialsPrivacy certifications (e.g., CIPP, CIPM), knowledge of privacy lawsSecurity certifications (e.g., CISSP, CISM), technical security skills
Work EnvironmentLegal, compliance, and policy-driven roles within organizationsIT, cybersecurity teams, technical environments

Data Privacy focuses on protecting personal information and ensuring compliance with privacy regulations, while Data Security emphasizes technical measures to prevent unauthorized data access. Both roles are essential for comprehensive data protection but differ in their primary objectives and skill sets.

What is data privacy?

Data privacy refers to the protection of personal or sensitive information from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure. It involves implementing policies, procedures, and technologies to ensure that individuals’ data is collected, stored, and processed in compliance with relevant laws and regulations. Data privacy professionals help organizations mitigate risks, maintain customer trust, and avoid legal penalties by ensuring proper handling of data. This field is especially important in industries that handle large volumes of personal information, such as healthcare, finance, and technology.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in data privacy roles?

Professionals in data privacy roles often encounter challenges such as keeping up with rapidly changing regulations, ensuring organization-wide compliance, and balancing data protection with business needs. They frequently collaborate with IT, legal, and business teams to develop and implement privacy policies, manage data subject requests, and respond to potential data breaches. Staying informed about new technologies and emerging threats is also essential, making continuous learning a key part of the role.

What is a data privacy job?

Data privacy jobs focus on helping a company manage and protect information. This has two primary focuses: company information and customer information. In these roles, you may study industry sources to evaluate potential risks, help ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and determine the best response to any violation of these rules. Data privacy jobs often involve using encryption to manage and store sensitive information, determining when or if to share information with others, and creating company policies to help ensure employees do not inadvertently violate privacy protection laws. Some industries—most notably healthcare—have additional data privacy requirements that you may be responsible for enforcing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data privacy professional?

To thrive as a Data Privacy professional, you need strong knowledge of data protection laws (like GDPR and CCPA), risk assessment, and compliance best practices, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications such as CIPP or CIPM. Familiarity with privacy management tools, data classification systems, and legal research databases is typically required. Attention to detail, ethical judgment, and effective communication are key soft skills for managing sensitive information and educating stakeholders. These skills ensure organizations remain compliant, protect customer trust, and mitigate the risks of data breaches.

At Sunoco, we take great pride in what we do and wholeheartedly believe our employees drive success for our company and our customers. We are always looking for the best and brightest talent and are committed to making your job a challenging and rewarding experience.

Competitive Benefits. Meaningful Extras. Unmatched Value.

  • A place where you can take your career in the direction you want to grow and go

The Opportunity:

We are seeking an experienced SAP AI Solution Architect to design and deliver scalable AI-powered solutions across the SAP ecosystem. This role will focus on leveraging SAP Business AI capabilities—including SAP Joule, predictive AI, copilots, and custom AI services on SAP BTP—to enhance business processes, automate workflows, and generate actionable insights. The successful candidate will collaborate with business and technical stakeholders to lead AI discovery workshops, architect innovative solutions, build prototypes, and drive enterprise AI adoption.

Responsibilities:

•    AI Use Case Design: Lead discovery sessions to identify high-impact AI use cases across SAP S/4HANA, BTP applications, and cross-system processes.
•    Solution Architecture: Design end-to-end AI workflows using SAP Business AI, Joule, SAP coproducts, AI Core, AI Launchpad, and custom AI services on BTP.
•    Prototyping & PoCs: Build and lead rapid PoCs and MVPs to validate feasibility, user experience, and business value.
•    Custom AI on BTP: Architect retrieval pipelines, embeddings, LLM-powered extensions, generative copilots, and side-by-side AI applications.
•    Integration & Extensibility: Design secure integrations between SAP core systems and AI services, leveraging CAP, Event Mesh, API Management, and clean-core patterns.
•    Responsible AI: Ensure compliance with enterprise security, governance, data privacy, and responsible AI guidelines.
•    Collaboration: Work closely with designers, developers, data engineers, and integration architects to bring AI-driven experiences to life.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • SAP certifications in BTP, AI, or Application Development preferred.

Requirements:

  • 7+ years in SAP architecture/development, with at least 2–3+ years focused on AI, BTP, automation, or intelligent extensions.
  • Proficiency in Python, JavaScript, SQL, and working with APIs and data formats (JSON, YAML).
  • Familiarity with SAP Business AI portfolio (Joule, predictive AI, SAP copilots).
  • Understanding of AI Core, AI Launchpad, vector stores, prompt engineering, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).
  • Experience designing or building AI-powered apps using CAP, Node.js/Java services, and BTP extension models.
  • Understanding of LLM architectures, embeddings, and integration patterns.
  • Architecture & Security: Strong grasp of clean-core extensibility, API-led design, event-driven patterns, OAuth2/JWT/SAML-based security, and enterprise governance.
  • Excellent communication, workshop facilitation, and ability to translate AI capabilities into actionable business outcomes.
  • Experience working across discovery, prototype, architecture, and delivery phases of complex SAP or AI programs.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience integrating SAP systems with hyperscaler AI services (Azure OpenAI, Vertex AI, AWS Bedrock).
  • Hands-on development of generative copilots, conversational UIs, or task automation flows.
  • Experience with knowledge models, enterprise search, or domain-specific vector stores.

Humble. Hungry. Smart. Does this sound like you?

Do others describe you as being a down-to-earth achiever? Someone who thinks outside the box and always strives to do more than what is required? Someone who sees the bigger picture? You sound brilliant to work with!

We Want You To Shine:

We are committed to providing equal opportunities to all applicants. If you require accommodation due to a disability, you will have an opportunity to notify us when scheduling your interview.

Belonging Matters. Because You Do:

We are an equal opportunity employer and encourage applications from all qualified individuals. Our ability to work as one team across Canada, the United States, and the Caribbean is foundational to our success. We show up as our authentic selves each day and create space for one another’s unique contributions.

We respect the diverse cultures, traditions, and perspectives of Indigenous Peoples and seek to achieve equitable partnerships and opportunities with Indigenous communities.

The Fine Print:

Candidates must be legally eligible to work in the country in which they applied. Regrettably, we are unable to sponsor employment visas at this time.

Final candidates will be required to undergo a confidential pre-employment background check, including but not limited to educational, criminal, credit, drug and alcohol, and/or fitness for duty testing.
