Job Overview

Performs network engineering, setup, configuration, installation, upgrades, advanced troubleshooting, and preventative/remedial maintenance for enterprise routing and switching environments, virtual private networking (VPN), firewalls, voice communications infrastructure/systems (including Voice Over IP), and wireless networking and monitoring systems. Manages complex technology projects in accordance with established project management methodology.

The ideal candidate is a motivated and detail-oriented Network Engineer with hands-on experience engineering, implementing, and supporting Cisco enterprise network infrastructure. Has a strong understanding of Cisco routing, switching, firewalls, and network security best practices, and thrives in environments that require both independent problem solving and cross team collaboration. Is comfortable troubleshooting complex network issues, documenting solutions, and communicating clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. A passion for continuous learning and improving network performance, reliability, and security is essential.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Engineers' solutions using established technology standards to develop multi-platform hardware/software solutions for enterprise routing and switching environments, virtual private networking (VPN), firewalls, voice communications infrastructure/systems (including Voice Over IP), and wireless networking and monitoring systems.
  • Provides Tier-2 and Tier-3 technical support for escalated complex issues in supporting multiple infrastructure platforms related to enterprise routing and switching environments, virtual private networking (VPN), firewalls, voice communications infrastructure/systems (including Voice Over IP), and wireless networking & monitoring systems.
  • Performs project management duties on complex technology projects in accordance with established project management methodology.
  • Performs remedial troubleshooting, preventative/remedial maintenance, installation, configuration, and upgrades, for enterprise routing and switching environments, virtual private networking (VPN), wireless networking, and voice communications infrastructure/systems (including Voice Over IP).
  • Provides technical debugging and troubleshooting for escalated complex issues in supporting multiple infrastructure platforms related to enterprise applications and databases.
  • Acts as team technical liaison for externally managed technology projects originating from the Enterprise Project Management Office as well as other Departments. 
  • Performs as supervisor to subordinate technical personnel engaged in performance of installation, maintenance and support of hardware and software systems.
  • Provides mentoring and training to peers and subordinates.
  • Develops, edits, and presents, technical designs, network diagrams, project plans and other technical reports.
  • Drives a vehicle to remote locations to deliver, pickup, install and/or troubleshoot equipment problems.
  • Works with vendors, clients, and other technical staff to resolve technical issues related to vendor-specific supported infrastructure.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of industry project methodologies and use of documentation platforms for project and technical documentation.
  • Knowledge of industry standards, characteristics, features and troubleshooting methods associated with network routing protocols, and/or switching methodologies, and/or firewall concepts, Virtual Private Networking (VPN) connectivity, and data network infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of industry standards, characteristics, features and troubleshooting methods associated with voice communications infrastructure/systems (Voice Over IP, Analog Communications, and Cellular).
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and manage multiple complex projects and tasks to meet delivery dates.
  • Ability to develop, edit, and present technical designs, network diagrams, project plans and other technical reports.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex hardware/software technical issues associated with enterprise routing and switching environments, virtual private networking (VPN), wireless networking, and voice communications infrastructure/systems (including Voice Over IP).
  • Ability to work effectively with others and provide superior customer service to end-users.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to end-users, vendors, management, and peers.

Physical Requirements

  • Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds).

  • Four years of enterprise network and voice infrastructure experience providing architecture design, establishing technology standards, developing multi-platform hardware / software solutions, and managing complex enterprise technology projects in accordance with formal project management methodologies; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education (not less than a high school diploma/GED), training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above.

Emergency Management Responsibilities

In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee's department, the County's Office of Emergency Management, or County Administration. Such assignments may be for before, during or after the emergency/disaster.
