What is a data junior?

Data Juniors are entry-level professionals who assist in collecting, cleaning, and analyzing data to support business decision-making. They typically work under the supervision of senior data analysts or data scientists and are responsible for tasks like data entry, basic data analysis, and generating simple reports. This role is ideal for those who are new to the data field and looking to gain practical experience while developing technical and analytical skills. Data Juniors often use tools such as Excel, SQL, and basic data visualization software. As they gain experience, they may progress to more advanced data roles within an organization.

What are some common challenges faced by data juniors when working with large datasets, and how can they overcome them?

Data Juniors often encounter challenges such as data quality issues, inconsistencies, and managing large volumes of information. These can be overwhelming at first, but using tools like SQL for data cleaning, and learning best practices in data validation, can help mitigate these issues. Collaborating closely with senior analysts and engineers is also key, as they can provide guidance and review your work to ensure accuracy. Staying organized and asking questions early on will support your development and help you handle more complex tasks over time.

What is the difference between Data Junior vs Data Analyst?

AspectData JuniorData Analyst
Required CredentialsOften an entry-level degree in data-related fields, certifications like Excel or basic SQLTypically a degree in data science, statistics, or related fields; may hold certifications like SQL, Python, or Tableau

Employer & Industry UsageUsed across industries as an entry-level position for data support rolesCommonly employed in finance, marketing, tech, and healthcare for data analysis tasks

In summary, Data Juniors are entry-level roles focused on learning and supporting data tasks, while Data Analysts have more experience and responsibilities in analyzing data and generating insights. The roles often overlap in skills and tools used, but Data Analysts typically handle more complex analysis and decision-making.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data junior, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Junior, you need a foundational understanding of data analysis, statistics, and proficiency with spreadsheet software, often supported by a degree in a quantitative field. Familiarity with tools like Microsoft Excel, SQL, and basic data visualization platforms such as Tableau or Power BI is typical. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help you accurately interpret data and present findings clearly. These competencies are crucial for ensuring data accuracy, supporting decision-making, and contributing to team projects in a data-driven environment.

A l'occasion, tu vas discuter avec les equipes techniques de nos clients pour comprendre leurs systemes avant d'integrer un nouveau connecteur. ABOUT BEEM

At BEEM, we transform the way businesses use their data, from pipelines to BI dashboards and generative AI, so they can make better business decisions.

We are an AWS Advanced Tier Partner and proud of what we've built: a complete SaaS platform combined with a team of experts available to support our clients. Our clients are growing mid-market companies across varied industries, like Le Groupe Maurice, EMD Batimo and Coffrages Synergy. They don't manage infrastructure and see concrete results without waiting months.

And the atmosphere at BEEM? A perfect balance of professional growth, laughs and strong team spirit. We also know how to enjoy the little things, like a glass of wine or scotch on Thursday afternoons!

THE ROLE

We're driven by real client demand and growing our team.

We're looking for someone who loves building and who is curious. The role is focused on building connectors and integrations, not on business analysis or data visualization: you'll learn our AWS infrastructure, write code published through a rigorous Git workflow with GitLab, and build the technical bridges that connect our clients' systems to our platform.

You'll also debug pipelines and existing integrations. Environments are in production with sensitive client data at high volume: testing rigour is not optional.

From time to time, you'll talk with our clients' technical teams to understand their systems before integrating a new connector. This isn't a sales or business consulting role, and it isn't a day-to-day client relationship role either: development stays the priority.

This role is posted as Data Developer Junior with the internal title of Data Specialist, technical track. Permanent full-time hybrid position, minimum 2 days per week in the office.

This role is for you if you're coming out of school or your first development experience and you're curious by nature. If you're looking for a purely business analysis or data visualization role, this isn't it.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Development & Integration

  • Build and maintain connectors and adapters that link our clients' systems to the BEEM platform
  • Debug pipelines and existing integrations: identify the source of the problem, test a hypothesis, deliver a clean fix
  • Write clean, tested code published to our code review standards: environments are in production with sensitive client data at high volume, testing rigour is important
  • Work with our AWS infrastructure, we'll train you if it's new to you
  • Pick up the networking fundamentals needed to securely connect remote systems
  • Contribute to the evolution of the BEEM platform as client needs evolve
  • Document integrations and technical decisions made throughout a mandate
  • Connect with our clients' technical teams when a system needs clarifying
  • Collaborate actively with the technical team: this is not a solo role

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Background in software engineering, computer science or equivalent, university or CEGEP, strong personal projects welcome if your path is less traditional
  • Strong curiosity for development and eagerness to learn new stacks
  • Comfort with at least one back-end programming language, primarily TypeScript
  • You structure your work methodically: you document, break tasks down, and test before you ship
  • You adapt quickly from one context to the next: mandates change, problems change too
  • You work well on a team: you share what you learn and ask when you're stuck
  • Networking fundamentals, or a fast willingness to learn them
  • Bilingual FR/EN communication

BONUS POINTS

  • Experience, even brief, at a dev shop or on a client mandate, internship or first job
  • Basic knowledge of AWS or another cloud environment: at BEEM we stay on AWS, interest in cloud is a long-term must, we'll train you if it's new
  • Git and a code review process: a sign of good work hygiene, it's a strong plus
  • Interest in data or applied generative AI
  • Comfort with occasional conversations with external technical teams
  • You enjoy learning with support and grow quickly with mentorship

WHAT WE OFFER

  • A competitive salary that recognizes your experience
  • 2 weeks of flexible paid vacation
  • 1 paid week off during the holiday shutdown
  • 2 unpaid flexible weeks
  • 5 wellness days per year and unlimited sick leave because your health comes first
  • Flexible remote work: we meet minimum 2 days per week in the office
  • Group insurance via Beneva, telemedicine via Dialogue and RRSP with employer contribution via iA Groupe Financier
  • Personal MacBook, yup, we don't work on Windows, sorry if ever!
  • Annual budget reimbursed for your training and professional growth
  • Referral bonus if you send someone our way and we hire them
  • Annual team retreat, Thursday happy hours and an active wellness committee because yes we work hard but we know when to disconnect
  • An open and modern workspace in the Old Port of Montreal
  • A team that genuinely loves what they do, the vibe at BEEM is our greatest asset!

We thank all applicants for their interest. Only those selected for a screen call will be contacted.
