Job description

Position Summary
Under the direction of Engineer III, the Engineer I will transform long term plans into actionable operation plans, resolving equipment related constraints and collaborating with operations and maintenance to achieve reclamation project deadlines.
Supervisor Responsibilities
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities over other employees.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop detailed daily, weekly, and monthly project schedules (dig plans, drill and blast plans, haulage plans) that align with the overall mine reclamation contract; are practical and safe to execute.
  • Prepare and publish short-term dig and push plans to equipment operators for use on machine guidance systems.
  • Monitor actual equipment productivity against planned targets on a daily and weekly basis, identifying variances and recommending corrective actions.
  • Perform field survey work with drones and manual survey equipment to measure conformance with final reclamation designs and post-mining topography.
  • Support preparation of project progress reports, including production metrics, schedule updates, and field observations.
  • Assist with soil respread quality control activities and maintain soil stockpile inventory records. Work closely with Operations and Maintenance teams to support plan execution, resolve day-to-day operational issues and ensure constructability of designs.
  • Conduct regular field visits and inspections to observe operations, verify compliance with plans and designs, and gain hands-on project experience.
  • Adhere to all company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements while working in office and field environments.

  • Requires prolonged sitting, with occasional bending, stooping, and stretching.
  • Frequent data entry for extended periods.
  • Occasional lifting of materials weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination sufficient to operate office equipment (e.g., keyboard, phone, copier, calculator, other office and field equipment)
  • Requires adequate hearing and vision to prepare, review, and communicate reports effectively.
  • Mobility sufficient to travel as needed.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required when working in mine, outdoor, manufacturing, or plant environments, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and, as needed, steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves, and other required equipment

Typical Working Conditions
Work involves both office and active mine site environments, requiring compliance with all safety and environmental standards and occasional evening or weekend work. Occasional offsite travel may be necessary depending on assigned duties.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field from an accredited university.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience that demonstrate the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered

Licenses, Registration, and Certifications
  • EIT/FE preferred.
  • You must possess a valid driver's license through the duration of employment.
  • Must meet all insurability requirements as specified by Westmoreland's policies or Driver's insurance provider.

Skills/Competencies

  • Effective problem-solving abilities.
  • Clear and professional communication skills.
  • Ability to utilize AutoCAD, Carlson Mining, Minescape and/or similar mine planning software packages.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with drone technology such as Pix4D or FLIR advantageous.
  • Experience with survey flying drones advantageous.
