Requirements
Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Coding Manager, The Outpatient Coder is responsible for accurately coding data following the Official International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10-Clinical Modification (CM), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) Guidelines for Coding and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) directives for Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH). Performs data entry of required abstracted patient information into the electronic medical record system. Queries physicians when appropriate. This position must be proficient in Profee coding, and regulations.
Required Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Proof of highest level of education completed but not less than high school education or equivalent.
  • 3 yrs of Profee coding
  • An AAPC or AHIMA certification to include CAH-BS, CCS, CPC, or CIC.
  • At least 2 years of active coding experience in: Facility Outpatient Coding, and Compliant Query practices.
  • Knowledge of coding compliance policies, official coding guidelines, regulatory requirements and internal policies and procedures affecting the coding process
  • Demonstrated knowledge coding diagnoses, operations, and non-operative procedures utilizing the ICD10-CM and CPT coding systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of physiology, anatomy, medical terminology, statistics, and computer skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of MGRMC staff and support personnel required.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in oral and written form.
  • An understanding of computer systems, process design and data management.
  • Must have a well-groomed, professional appearance.
  • Must have the mental and physical ability to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation, the essential functions of the job.
  • Ability to lift, carry, pull, & push 50 pounds.
  • Language proficiency in English, with excellent written and verbal fluency.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous Meditech experience or other related electronic records systems.
