What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Engineering Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Engineering Intern, you need foundational knowledge in programming (especially Python or Java), databases, and data structures, often obtained through coursework in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with SQL, cloud platforms (like AWS or Azure), and data pipeline tools such as Apache Spark or Airflow is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set exceptional interns apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for efficiently handling data workflows, collaborating with teams, and contributing to high-quality data solutions.

What types of projects and technologies can a Data Engineering Intern expect to work with during their internship?

As a Data Engineering Intern, you’ll typically work on projects involving data pipeline development, data cleaning, and integration of data from various sources. You can expect to use technologies like SQL, Python, and tools such as Apache Spark, Hadoop, or cloud platforms like AWS or Google Cloud. Interns often collaborate closely with data engineers, analysts, and sometimes data scientists to ensure data is accessible, reliable, and well-organized for analysis. This hands-on experience helps you build foundational skills and understand real-world data workflows within a collaborative team environment.

What does a Data Engineering Intern do?

A Data Engineering Intern assists in building and maintaining the systems and infrastructure that allow organizations to collect, store, and analyze large volumes of data. Their responsibilities often include cleaning and organizing raw data, developing data pipelines, and supporting the work of data engineers and data scientists. Interns may also work with tools like SQL, Python, and cloud platforms to automate data workflows. This role provides hands-on experience in managing data processes and understanding the fundamentals of data engineering in a real-world environment.

What is the difference between Data Engineering Intern vs Data Analyst Intern?

JAGGAER is a proven industry leader of comprehensive sourcing & procurement solutions. Our SaaS-based, source-to-settle solution provides unparalleled visibility, insights and recommendations to procurement leaders and suppliers. The result is a fluid supply chain driven by powerful spend analysis, comprehensive contract management and efficient accounts payable solutions.
Principal Responsibilities
We are seeking AI/ML Interns to join our AI & Innovation team. Our team is building the next generation of intelligent procurement solutions, leveraging Agentic AI, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), large language models (LLMs), and other cutting-edge AI technologies to transform how organizations manage sourcing and spend.
As an intern, you will contribute to real AI projects from day one-designing and building RAG pipelines, prototyping agentic workflows, and integrating LLMs into our product ecosystem. You will collaborate closely with our engineering and data science teams to bring AI-driven features from concept to production.
As an AI/ML Intern, we expect you will learn about JAGGAER's business, our customers, and our technology while gaining hands-on experience with state-of-the-art AI tools and frameworks. You will have access to experienced engineers and researchers who are eager to mentor you and are equally interested in the fresh perspectives you bring. You will start working on meaningful AI projects right away.
Position Requirements
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
• Design, develop, and optimize Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines using vector databases, embedding models, and LLM APIs.
• Prototype and build agentic AI workflows that autonomously plan, reason, and execute multi-step tasks within our procurement platform.
• Evaluate and benchmark LLMs and AI models for accuracy, latency, cost, and relevance across different procurement use cases.
• Develop and refine prompt engineering strategies to improve the quality and reliability of LLM-generated outputs.
• Build data ingestion and preprocessing pipelines to prepare enterprise documents for embedding and retrieval.
• Research emerging AI techniques (e.g., function calling, multi-agent orchestration, fine-tuning) and present findings to the team.
• Contribute to our library of reusable AI components, tools, and integration patterns.
• Participate in demos and feedback sessions to validate AI features with internal stakeholders and customers.
• Document AI experiments, model performance metrics, and architectural decisions to build our team's knowledge base.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING
• Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, AI/ML, Data Science, or a related field.
• Strong programming skills in Python; familiarity with AI/ML libraries such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, Hugging Face Transformers, or scikit-learn.
• Exposure to LLM frameworks and tools (e.g., LangChain, LlamaIndex, OpenAI API, or similar) is a plus.
• Foundational understanding of machine learning concepts, NLP, and deep learning architectures.
• Familiarity with vector databases (e.g., Pinecone, Weaviate, ChromaDB, FAISS) and embedding techniques is a plus.
• Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills with a genuine curiosity about emerging AI technologies.
• Relevant coursework or personal projects in AI, machine learning, or NLP are highly valued.
SUCCESS IN THIS POSITION
• Demonstrates strong problem-solving skills and a passion for applying AI to real-world procurement challenges
• Collaborates effectively with engineers, data scientists, and product managers to deliver AI-powered solutions
• Embraces rapid prototyping and iterative experimentation-comfortable with ambiguity and evolving AI technologies
• Balances research exploration with a bias toward shipping-turning AI experiments into production-ready features
• Takes initiative in learning new AI tools, techniques, and frameworks with minimal direction
• Brings fresh ideas on how AI can improve our products, processes, and customer outcomes
• Finds genuine excitement in pushing the boundaries of what AI can do for enterprise procurement
