What is the difference between Data Engineer vs Data Scientist?

AspectData EngineerData Scientist
Primary FocusBuilding and maintaining data pipelines and infrastructureAnalyzing data to extract insights and create models
SkillsSQL, ETL, programming (Python, Java), database managementStatistics, machine learning, data analysis, programming (Python, R)
Work EnvironmentData warehouses, cloud platforms, backend systemsData analysis environments, research labs, visualization tools
Common ToolsApache Spark, Hadoop, Airflow, SQLJupyter, RStudio, Tableau, scikit-learn

Data Engineers focus on creating and maintaining the infrastructure that allows data to be collected, stored, and processed efficiently. Data Scientists analyze this data to generate insights, build predictive models, and support decision-making. While their skills overlap, Data Engineers are more involved in data pipeline development, whereas Data Scientists focus on data analysis and modeling.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, data modeling, and programming languages such as Python or Java, often coupled with a relevant degree. Familiarity with ETL tools, big data frameworks (like Hadoop or Spark), and cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure) is typically required, along with certifications like AWS Certified Data Analytics. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set exceptional data engineers apart. These skills and qualities are essential for building robust data pipelines, ensuring data quality, and supporting data-driven decision-making across organizations.

What does a data engineer do?

The job duties of a data engineer involve helping with the development of systems, software, and infrastructure used to process, store and analyze data. Your responsibilities in this career include working to install data management software. Your employer may expect you to perform maintenance and install updates to all software and systems that they use for data acquisition, management, and analysis. Data engineers also analyze existing data systems to find ways to improve efficiency and accessibility. You then suggest upgrades or changes based on your assessment.

What is a data engineer?

Data Engineers are IT professionals who design, construct, install, and maintain large-scale processing systems and other infrastructure for collecting, storing, and analyzing data. They build and optimize data pipelines and architectures that allow organizations to efficiently access and use data for business insights. Data Engineers work closely with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to ensure that data is reliable, accessible, and secure. Their responsibilities often include working with databases, cloud platforms, and big data tools.

How do data engineers typically collaborate with data scientists and analysts within an organization?

Data Engineers play a crucial role in ensuring that Data Scientists and Analysts have reliable, well-structured data for their projects. This collaboration often involves building and maintaining data pipelines, optimizing data storage solutions, and troubleshooting data quality issues. Regular communication and agile teamwork are common, with Data Engineers frequently participating in meetings to understand analytical requirements and adjust data processes accordingly. By working closely together, these teams can quickly iterate on data models and deliver actionable insights to drive business decisions.

Is a data engineer entry level?

Data engineering is typically an intermediate to senior-level role that requires experience with programming, databases, and data pipelines. Entry-level positions may be available for those with relevant internships or strong foundational skills, but most data engineering roles demand several years of experience and proficiency with tools like SQL, Python, and cloud platforms.

Job description

Job Summary

As an Applications/Integration Engineer at the Robotic Metaplant Application Center (RMAC), you will serve as the engineering resource driving the transition of the Atlas humanoid robot into production-level automotive manufacturing. This unique role combines fleet management with application development. You will be the onsite engineering team responsible for the health of the onsite Atlas fleet while simultaneously designing the curriculum and playbooks that define how Atlas learns to perform complex sequencing and assembly tasks. Your work directly supports our long term goal to collect large volumes of high-quality data to enable Atlas's use in automotive manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities

1. Data Collection Strategy & Curriculum Design

  • Design and architect specific data collection tasks and scenarios to be executed by the robot operations team based on an in-depth understanding of Atlas capabilities and product goals for automotive manufacturing.

  • Create detailed playbooks for each data collection task, ensuring high-quality, consistent data generation that meets strict QA standards.

  • Develop success criteria and execute Operational Level Testing (OLT) and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) for behavior policies.

  • Pilot Coaching & Evaluation: Provide expert feedback and coaching to Robot Pilots on best techniques; partner with the annotation team to identify and correct poor piloting trends.

  • Collaborate with the Behavior team to implement best practices and provide feedback on system usability and performance.

2. Fleet Management & Technical Triage

  • Serve as the "Robot Captain" and first responder for robot hardware and software issues, performing deep-dive technical triage to localize failures.

  • Analyze system logs, telemetry, and Real-Time (RT) code to narrow issues down to specific subsystems (sensors, actuators, or firmware).

  • Coordinate with Onsite HW Support as well as Atlas Fleet management and engineering teams in Waltham to resolve complex, systemic field issues.

  • Own and prioritize the daily experiment queue to maximize robot utilization and uptime during core shifts.

  • Performance tracking of daily and long term performance metrics. Metrics reporting into established tracking systems

3. Site Integration & Automotive Deployment

  • Develop playbooks and processes for integrating Atlas into HMGMA and Glovis facilities, ensuring solutions do not overfit to site-specific workflows.

  • Oversee site-level solution architecture, managing network infrastructure and configuration for robust system connectivity.

  • Facilitate pilot execution in HMGMA facilities once applications pass OLT.

  • Coordinate directly with HMGMA/Glovis stakeholders on data and workflow integration for pilot and production deployments.

Desired Skills & Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.

  • Experience: 3-5+ years of professional experience in field application engineering, systems engineering, or robotics operations.

  • Technical skills:

    • Proficiency in Linux (Ubuntu), including command-line management and networking telemetry.

    • Experience with issue tracking systems (JIRA) and data-driven monitoring tools like Tableau.

  • Automation: Proficiency in Python, C++, or scripting to develop custom tools, automate workflows, and troubleshoot integration challenges.

  • Communication: Proven ability to translate complex technical concepts for diverse audiences, including research scientists, executive stakeholders, and daily operators.

Travel & Availability
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically to other potential Atlas deployment sites or to Boston Dynamics HQ

  • Ability to support a multi-shift operation (6am-2pm and 2pm-10pm) as needed to ensure fleet continuity.

The pay range for this position is between $134,000 to $170,000 annually. Base pay will depend on multiple individualized factors including, but not limited to internal equity, job related knowledge, skills and experience. This range represents a good faith estimate of compensation at the time of posting. Boston Dynamics offers a generous Benefits package including medical, dental vision, 401(k), paid time off and an annual bonus structure. Additional details regarding these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer for employment.
