Job description

Overview
We are seeking a full-time Senior Data Engineer at Garmin's U.S. headquarters in the Greater Kansas City area. In this role, you will be responsible for leading administration of technology by contributing expertise in researching new technologies and proposing cost effective solutions.
Essential Functions
  • Provides technical input to feature development plans and concept documents
  • Administers/maintains a container-based and Kubernetes-based Airflow installations
  • Understands production and operations issues as they relate to engineering
  • Configures and administers data servers and Hadoop components
  • Develops scalable, extensible solution architectures leveraging contemporary big-data technologies in an evolving operational framework
  • Analyzes existing data structures and recommends improvements
  • Partners with team lead to identify technical requirements and alternatives to accomplish projects, leads major incident troubleshooting involving multiple disciplines and develops reliable solutions to complex problems which require ingenuity and creativity
  • Participates in design, code, test, maintenance, enhance and decommission phases throughout software life cycle to contribute technical expertise and to identify issues
  • Participates in and helps guide research POCs, including design, coding, and performance and efficacy measurement
  • Provides significant contributions to defining team roadmap and priorities, facilitates team discussions and plans, and offers innovative suggestions within area of discipline
  • Demonstrates broad understanding of Garmin's business model, including various departments and is recognized as an expert in assigned discipline and applies extensive technical expertise and analysis to initiatives
  • Researches new technologies and proposes cost effective solutions and contributes input to broader technology solutions outside of discipline
  • Provides 24x7 on call support

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Business or related field AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
  • In-depth knowledge of Airflow, Kafka, Star Schema Modeling, Python, SQL, Streamlit and pySpark
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and Linux systems
  • Demonstrated ability to implement new technologies effectively
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Consistently demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work documentation/organization

Desired Qualifications
  • Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
  • Experience with Java, Open Search, S3, Spark, Hadoop and various components
