Data Engineer Contract information

What is a data engineer contract?

A Data Engineer Contract job is a temporary or project-based role where a data engineer is hired for a specific duration to design, build, and maintain data pipelines and infrastructure. Contract data engineers often work with big data technologies, ETL processes, and cloud platforms to ensure data is efficiently processed and accessible. These roles can be short-term (a few months) or long-term (a year or more), depending on the project's needs. Contractors may work independently or as part of a larger data team, and they are typically paid hourly or per project rather than receiving a fixed salary and benefits like full-time employees.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a data engineer contract?

As a Data Engineer contractor, your day-to-day tasks often include designing, building, and maintaining data pipelines, implementing ETL processes, and preparing datasets for analytics or machine learning teams. You may be asked to collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and other engineers to understand data requirements and resolve technical issues. Contractors also frequently assess data quality, optimize performance, and document their work for seamless team integration. The role is fast-paced and may require you to quickly adapt to new projects or technologies, making it ideal for those who enjoy dynamic, project-based environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the data engineer contract position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Engineer Contract, you need expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and proficiency with programming languages such as Python or SQL, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with big data platforms like Hadoop or Spark, experience with cloud services (AWS, GCP, or Azure), and certifications in relevant technologies are highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to work independently are crucial soft skills. These abilities ensure data engineers can efficiently design scalable pipelines, troubleshoot issues, and collaborate across teams to support data-driven decision-making.

Job description

What it's like to be a Data Modeler (Contract) at Northbridge Financial

We are seeking an experienced Data Modeler/architect with deep domain expertise in Property & Casualty insurance to design, develop, and maintain enterprise data models that support Policy, Claims, Underwriting, Risk, Regulatory and Premium data structures. The ideal candidate will bridge business and technical teams, translating complex insurance business requirements into robust, scalable, and well-governed data models that power analytics, reporting, and downstream systems.

Success in this role requires a well-rounded mix of technical expertise, business insight, and interpersonal effectiveness, together with the ability to distinguish organizational processes from the technologies used to facilitate them.

We want your talent

If you are great at:

  • Designing and developing conceptual, logical, and physical data models for P&C insurance domains, including Policy, Claims, Underwriting, Risk, and Premium data.
  • Collaborating with business stakeholders, actuaries, underwriters, BA/BSA and claim teams, gather and translate business requirements into data model designs.
  • Creating and maintaining entity relationship diagrams (ERDs), data dictionaries, and metadata documentation.
  • Establishing and enforcing data modeling standards, naming conventions, and best practices across the organization.
  • Working closely with data engineering teams to deliver data models and semantic layers that support analytics and reporting across data warehouses, data lakes, and cloud platforms
  • Performing data profiling, applicable mapping, and gap analysis across policy administration, claims, and underwriting source systems.
  • Supporting the design of dimensional models (star/snowflake schemas) for reporting and analytics use cases.
  • Ensure data models align with industry standards and frameworks.
  • Working closely with data governance teams to ensure data quality, lineage, and compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g., IFRS 17).
  • Reviewing and validate models to ensure scalability, performance, and alignment with enterprise architecture principles.
  • Supporting migration and modernization initiatives, including legacy system decommissioning and cloud data platform adoption.
  • Leverage AI-assisted tools to accelerate model design, generate documentation, and automate data dictionary/metadata creation/validation for accuracy.
  • Supporting solution/data architects by reviewing data integration designs, data mappings, and transformation logic to ensure alignment with enterprise data architecture standards.
  • Ensure Enterprise data flow diagrams are up to date.

If you have:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems or a related study - or equivalent project-related experience.
  • 5-10 years of hands-on experience in data modeling, data architecture, or senior data engineering roles.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication.
  • Ability to work independently and lead data modeling initiatives.
  • Knowledge of CSIO and ACORD industry frameworks.
  • Advanced knowledge of SQL (popular variants).
  • Experience with Data Modeling tools.
  • Experience in Services Oriented Architecture, Object oriented models, canonical data models and XML.
  • Experience in databases - SQL Server, Oracle and Snowflake.
  • Experience in Metadata Management tools and Data Quality tools.
  • Prior experience supporting policy administration system implementations or migrations (e.g., Guidewire, Duck Creek).

We really mean it when we say we put you first. Here are a few ways how:

  • Hybrid work! You get to work from the office and at home 50/50, allowing you to manage both worlds with the ease and flexibility you need.
  • We offer competitive salaries and support your financial health through our employee share purchase plan, pension plans, RRSP, discounts on staff insurance, and more!
  • We help you prioritize your well-being from day one through flexible health benefits, early leave days, wellness programs, rewards, and recognition programs.
  • We are invested in helping you grow in your career through education assistance to complete your CIP, FCIP, CRM or other courses desired, internal mobility, Leadership training and mentoring programs.
  • NBFC cares about the community and supports the causes you believe in with donation matching and team volunteer days.

We're committed to pay transparency and fairness. The hourly rate range for this role is $80-$90/hour which reflects the expected base pay - not the total compensation package. The actual rate may vary depending on your experience, skills, and alignment with the position. We're also open to candidates at different levels, so if this range doesn't quite match your expectations, don't let that hold you back - we'd still love to hear from you.

This is a real opportunity - we're actively hiring! If the role sounds like a good fit, we encourage you to apply. Beyond base pay, we offer a robust Total Rewards program that includes benefits, wellness support, and other meaningful perks.

We also want to be transparent about our hiring process. While one of our systems includes AI capabilities, over 99% of our screening is done by real people. We believe in thoughtful, human-centered hiring decisions, and are committed to giving every application the attention it deserves.
