Job Description

Eccalon LLC is seeking a highly motivated and innovative Battery Storage Engineer to lead research, development, and integration of next-generation battery technologies for grid-scale energy storage systems. This role will focus on the exploration of advanced battery chemistries and architectures to enable higher energy densities, lower cost per kWh, and improved safety and lifecycle performance. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with cell design, prototyping, and performance evaluation, as well as knowledge of integration strategies for large-scale energy storage applications. A strong background in materials science is essential to support the development and evaluation of novel battery components and structures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research, design, and test advanced battery chemistries including but not limited to solid-state, sodium-ion, lithium-sulfur, and flow batteries.
  • Develop experimental methods for assessing electrochemical performance, thermal stability, and degradation mechanisms.
  • Collaborate with materials scientists and chemical engineers to source and synthesize novel battery components.
  • Design and build prototype cells for laboratory testing and scale-up validation.
  • Evaluate the lifecycle, cost, and scalability of new battery technologies for deployment in grid-scale applications.
  • Work with system engineers to integrate storage solutions into renewable energy systems and data center applications.
  • Contribute to the design of Battery Management Systems (BMS) for monitoring and control of advanced storage systems.
  • Stay current with advancements in battery research, manufacturing processes, and safety regulations.
  • Support grant proposals, SBIR projects, and customer engagements by providing technical insights into battery R&D.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrochemistry, or a related discipline.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in battery R&D, preferably in a lab or pilot manufacturing setting.
  • In-depth understanding of electrochemical cell design, electrode fabrication, electrolyte formulations, and testing protocols.
  • Familiarity with safety considerations and regulatory standards for grid-scale battery deployment.
  • Experience using analytical tools such as EIS, CV, GC, SEM, and XRD for battery performance evaluation.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills with a passion for innovation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for cross-functional collaboration and documentation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in a related field with a focus on battery chemistry or energy storage systems.
  • Experience working on DOE-funded or ARPA-E battery research programs.
  • Background in techno-economic analysis or lifecycle assessment (LCA) of energy storage technologies.
  • Familiarity with modeling tools for electrochemical systems (e.g., COMSOL, MATLAB, or Python-based simulation frameworks).
