Position Summary

The Traveling Data Center Field Service Engineer is responsible for supporting mission-critical cooling infrastructure across North America, with a primary focus on data center startup, commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and emergency response activities. This role is intended for highly skilled HVAC and chiller technicians with advanced technical capabilities and the ability to work effectively in demanding customer environments.

The position supports hyperscale, colocation, and enterprise data center customers and requires extensive travel to customer sites for project-based assignments that may range from several weeks to multiple months in duration. The technician will serve as a key field resource in ensuring the safe, reliability, and efficient operation of complex cooling systems that support critical infrastructure.

This role requires a strong commitment to safety, customer satisfaction, technical excellence, and operational responsiveness.

Essential Job Functions
  • Perform startup, commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and operational support for mission-critical cooling systems in data center environments.
  • Diagnose and repair complex HVAC and chiller systems, including air-cooled and water-cooled equipment.
  • Support field activities involving screw and centrifugal compressor technologies.
  • Respond to critical service events, equipment failures, and customer emergency situations in a timely and professional manner.
  • Execute preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance activities in accordance with company standards and customer requirements.
  • Interface with building automation systems, controls platforms, and related mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Support customer operations teams during planned deployments and active service assignments.
  • Assist with system performance evaluations, root cause analysis, and reliability improvement efforts.
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and timely service records, field reports, and related documentation.
  • Follow all company safety policies, customer site requirements, and regulatory standards.
  • Travel extensively throughout North America based on business needs, project requirements, and customer demand.
  • Maintain professional and effective communication with customers, contractors, project teams, and internal stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or vocational education in HVAC, mechanical systems, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of field experience in HVAC, chiller service, or related mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated experience servicing and troubleshooting:
    • Air-cooled chillers
    • Water-cooled chillers
    • Screw compressors
    • Centrifugal compressors
    • Hydronic systems
    • Cooling towers
    • Pumps and associated mechanical systems
  • Working knowledge of control systems and building automation systems.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve complex mechanical and electrical issues.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Strong knowledge of lockout/tagout procedures, electrical safety practices, and safe work methods.
  • EPA certification required.
  • Valid driver's license required with an acceptable driving record.
  • Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and compliance.
  • Ability to travel extensively and work flexible hours, including extended shifts, weekends, or holidays as business needs require.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision in fast-paced and high-pressure environments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree, technical certification, or equivalent advanced training in HVAC, mechanical systems, electrical systems, or a related field.
  • 5 or more years of experience in mission-critical, large-tonnage, or complex chiller environments.
  • Experience supporting hyperscale, colocation, or enterprise data center facilities.
  • OEM certifications, factory training, or specialized technical training related to chiller systems and controls.
  • Experience working with equipment manufactured by:

    • Stulz
    • Johnson Controls
  • Familiarity with sequence of operations, controls logic, and commissioning processes.
  • Electrical troubleshooting capability up to 480V.
  • Experience supporting uptime-critical customer environments.
Travel Requirements

This position requires extensive travel throughout North America 75%. Travel assignments may be short-term or long-term in duration depending on project scope, customer requirements, and business needs. Technicians must be able to support extended deployments away from their home location.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work in elevated or confined spaces, including rooftops, mechanical rooms, and equipment platforms.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work for extended periods.
  • Ability to work in varying environmental and job site conditions.
  • Ability to work extended hours during critical events, outages, startup activities, or deployment assignments.
Work Environment

This position primarily operates in industrial, commercial, and mission-critical facility environments, including active data centers and mechanical equipment spaces. The role may involve exposure to variable temperatures, noise, moving mechanical equipment, and other site-specific conditions. Appropriate personal protective equipment and adherence to safety procedures are required at all times.
