Job description

Technician will provide will perform installation and repair activities on OEM devices and equipment from Cisco, ALU, (Nokia,) and other OEM. The Data Center Technician will also conduct site surveys, rack and stack equipment and run communications cabling, including power and ground. All work will be documented, and technicians will strictly adhere to safety standards. Will also maintain digital access cross connect systems and work on circuit wiring in the Data Centers. This role is well suited for a Field Technician with 5+ years of Central Office or Data Center installation and maintenance experience.
Essential Functions:
  • Install and commission routers and switches in Data Center and other communications facilities
  • Perform physical installation including site survey, "rack and stack", cabling, fiber, and some power and ground cable work
  • Commission newly installed equipment, verify power-up, and support on-site integration, as needed by customer
  • Run new cabling as needed; use existing cable plant when appropriate
  • Install 25 pair and CAT 5e cables. RJ45/RJ48 connectors, optical fibers and connectors, perform port testing, labeling and dress all wiring, per corporate standards
  • Clean and Test fibers using OTDR

Other Functions:
  • Document work performed per customer standard requirements
  • Complete all required tests to gain access to customer facility
  • Read and understand Scope of Work (SOW) and Memorandum of Procedure (MOP)
  • Complete all technical reading and study requirements to install new equipment
  • Must be familiar with and be able to comply with standard facility protocols

Work Environment/Physical Demands:
  • Work will be performed in a Telephone Central Office or Data Center with cold air conditioning and a moderate background noise environment
  • Must have own standard tools, per tool list; company will provide specialized tools
  • Extensive use of hand tools, wire cutters, pliers, screwdrivers and specialized wiring tools; electronic tablet to track work tasks; some power tools may also be used
  • Adhere to all safety standards around low voltage and high voltage electric power
  • 100% travel, road trips, flights, long and short hotel stays
  • Extensive driving may be required

Required Education/Experience and Competencies:
  • High School Diploma or GED is required
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record are required
  • Must pass background check and drug screen
  • Expert installation skills with low-voltage electric and light gauge wiring used for signaling
  • Proficient with hand tools such as pliers, wire cutters, wire strippers, screwdrivers, etc.
  • Familiar with Data Center entry, safety and work procedures, facility layout, power, ground, and ancillary equipment operation, troubleshooting and problem resolution
  • Familiar with Service Provider routers from Cisco (CSRx, ASRx, 7600, etc.) and/or Nokia (ALU 7750, 7705, etc.) or Ciena OM 6500, or other OEM
  • Familiar with power tools such as battery-operated drills and electric soldering irons
  • High physical flexibility including bending, stooping, laying down, and climbing ladders to reach cross connects
  • Familiar with provisioning orders, wiring, and troubleshooting process and procedures
  • English language comm skills; must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with other team members who may have limited English language proficiency
  • Must be willing and able to train lower-level technicians as needed
  • Maintain a positive attitude and work as a contributing team player
  • Able to work daytime shifts and nighttime maintenance windows, as required
