Data Catalog information

What is a data catalog?

A Data Catalog job typically involves managing and maintaining an organization's data catalog, which serves as a central repository for metadata about data assets. This role includes tasks such as organizing, classifying, and documenting data to improve discoverability, governance, and usability. Professionals in this field collaborate with data engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders to ensure data is well-documented and accessible. The goal is to enhance data quality, compliance, and efficiency in an organization’s data management strategy.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a data catalog?

In a Data Catalog role, your primary daily responsibilities often include maintaining and updating metadata in the data catalog platform, ensuring data sources are accurately documented, and collaborating with data stewards to uphold data quality standards. You may also facilitate the onboarding of new data assets, address user queries regarding data discoverability, and support data governance initiatives by enforcing cataloging best practices. Regular interaction with data engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders is common, as you help bridge the gap between technical systems and business needs. This role is instrumental in making organizational data more accessible, trustworthy, and valuable across teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a data catalog, and why are they important?

To excel in a Data Catalog role, you need a comprehensive understanding of data management principles, metadata standards, and experience with data governance frameworks, typically supported by a degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with data catalog tools such as Collibra, Alation, or Informatica, and relevant certifications like DAMA or CDMP, are highly beneficial. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective stakeholder communication are critical soft skills. These capabilities ensure the organization, discoverability, and governance of data assets, empowering teams to confidently leverage data while maintaining compliance.

What does a data catalog do?

A data catalog is a tool used by data professionals, including those in data catalog roles, to organize, manage, and discover data assets within an organization. It provides metadata, data lineage, and search capabilities to improve data accessibility and governance, often integrating with data management tools and requiring knowledge of data structures and security protocols.
