Data BI (Business Intelligence) Engineers are professionals who design, build, and maintain systems that transform raw data into meaningful business insights. They develop data pipelines, integrate various data sources, and create reports or dashboards to support decision-making processes. Their work ensures that companies have accurate, timely, and actionable information to drive strategy and operations. Data BI Engineers typically work closely with data analysts, data scientists, and business stakeholders.

What is the difference between Data Bi Engineer vs Data Analyst?

Understanding these differences helps organizations assign the right responsibilities and professionals for their data needs.

How does a Data BI engineer typically collaborate with business stakeholders and data analysts?

A Data BI Engineer frequently works with business stakeholders and data analysts to understand data requirements, translate business needs into technical specifications, and ensure data solutions align with organizational goals. This role often involves participating in meetings to gather requirements, sharing progress updates, and iterating on dashboards or data pipelines based on feedback. Effective communication is key, as Data BI Engineers must bridge the gap between technical data structures and actionable business insights. Regular collaboration helps ensure that the data solutions provided are both technically sound and valuable for decision-making.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data BI engineer?

To thrive as a Data BI Engineer, you need strong skills in data modeling, SQL, ETL processes, and a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or Looker, as well as experience with data warehouses and cloud platforms like AWS or Azure, is typically required. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for translating data insights into actionable business recommendations. These skills and qualities are essential for building reliable data solutions that empower organizations to make informed, data-driven decisions.

Job description

At MyFitnessPal, we believe good health starts with what you eat. We provide tools, resources and support to enable users to reach their health goals.
We are looking for a product-minded BI Engineer to join the MyFitnessPal Business Intelligence team. As a Sr. BI Engineer, you will be an expert on MyFitnessPal KPI reporting and play a key role in making the MyFitnessPal data environment amenable to self-service via Tableau. The Business Intelligence team is a great place to be at MyFitnessPal. We are on the pulse of the business as we are responsible for KPIs, Monitoring and Alerts, AB Testing, Data Democratization, and Strategic Insights.
What you'll be doing:
  • Perform regular maintenance to maintain the quality of our data; in particular, take ownership of our reporting data pipeline and business logic
    • Manage complexity when data sources tell different stories
    • Diagnose changes in KPIs and help identify drivers
    • Create clear and easy-to-understand analysis and recommendations
    • Ensure scalability, reliability, and efficiency in BI infrastructure
  • Perform deep-dive analytics on ad-hoc requests from stakeholders across the organization
  • Build and maintain dashboards, reports, and visualizations to provide actionable insights on MyFitnessPal users
  • Architect data models to further our data democratization efforts and contribute to our reporting "curated zone" architecture
  • Develop strong relationships with our partners in Data Engineering to manage projects that unlock data for the BI team
  • Most importantly, be a trusted partner to our marketing and product BA teams and the core business functions they support
Qualifications to be successful in this role:
  • 4-6 years in a BI Engineering or Analytics Engineering role. Equivalent technology industry experience within business intelligence, analytics, or data engineering functions will be considered
  • Advanced to Expert SQL
  • Proficiency with data visualization using tools like Tableau, Power BI, or Looker
  • Familiarity with programming languages like Python or R for analytics
  • Experience building data warehouses and modeling data through ETL pipelines (e.g. Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery)
  • Experience with project management and supporting relationships with cross-functional stakeholders (Product, Data Engineering)
  • Ability to understand business needs and translate them into technical solutions
  • Curious Mindset - We are looking for someone who enjoys seeking the truth through data - if you ever found yourself bringing in out-of-the-box datasets and theories because you just had to figure out why a number moved, this is the job for you
  • MS in an appropriate technology field (Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Math, etc.) or equivalent experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience building AI-ready data models and semantic layers, with familiarity using data cataloging tools such as Secoda
  • Experience working in consumer-facing app environments (e.g., subscription/DTC mobile or web products), with an understanding of user acquisition, retention, and engagement metrics unique to consumer products

Values you'll model
  • Be Kind and Care - build with empathy; assume positive intent; support teammates and members.
  • Live Good Health - champion healthy habits and balance in how we work and what we ship.
  • Be Data-Inspired - ground decisions in research and data; measure what matters.
  • Champion Change - lean into ambiguity; iterate, learn, and improve continuously.
  • Leave it Better than You Found It - raise quality, clarify systems, and document as you go.
  • Make It Happen - bias to action; deliver impact with craft and accountability.
