Job description


Some of what you will do:
The Staples technology team is seeking a talented and energetic Team Manager to lead our Data Engineering team. We want an individual who will challenge the norm, strive to create the best experience's and someone who always puts the customer first. You will have a passion for Data Engineering, Data architecture and a willingness to share learnings within your development team. 


Specifically, You Will:

Manage and Develop Associates (40%)

  • Developing and mentor associates through proper task delegation and active observation and interaction.
  • Evaluates performance of the assigned associates via the performance review process. 
  • Recruit new hires for the team resulting from expansion and/or to backfill due to attrition (voluntary and involuntary) within applications group 
  • With guidance from the Director and HR, address and manage associate performance concerns if required
  • With guidance from the Director, manage 3rd party vendors in the support and development of the applications within the assigned Area. This includes the daily management of consultants and temporary resources who are on contract. 
  • Offer your input and expertise to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Work with technology technical leads and business leadership to define the right technology solutions to solve complex problems
  • Help maintain and improve current applications 
  • Collaborate with team members in an agile environment

Manage the Area's work (60%)

  • Manage and complete the business objectives supported and dependent of the applications within the assigned area. 

  • Manage the assigned associates to ensure the work is completed on schedule, as per the specifications and on budget.

  • Delegate and manage the group's work in a proper and professional manner

  • Escalate issues (tactical and strategic) to the Director in a timely manner

  • Communicate area specific updates to the VP IS and other members of the Executive Team when required 

  • Work in a collaborative, effective and professional manner with his/her peers (other TM's or Managers from other departments and within IS)

  • Ensure the internal processes, procedures, methodologies and technologies utilized within applications are updated, effective and keeping in line with industry best practices

  • Develop process improvements and other initiatives which could lead to cost savings, morale boosting and measurable efficiency improvements within Applications, IS and the Business

  • Implement, stabilize, maintain, upgrade and enhance the suite of applications within their assigned Area 


Some of what you need:

  • Degree in Computer Science or relevant work experience
  • Leadership Experience: 3+ years of management experience in data engineering, with a proven track record of building and leading teams in a fast-paced, growth environment. You have experience shaping new functions and driving change within an organization.
  • Proven Technical Expertise: You have 6+ years of experience in implementing data warehouse architecture standards, processes, and methodologies in data engineering, with hands-on expertise in designing and implementing data pipelines, ETL processes, and data platforms. (Microsoft SQL Server)
  • Deep understanding of design principles of distributed systems with streaming data platform platforms frameworks and technologies 
  • Experience designing and development of DB Systems (Diagrams, Tables, Views, SQL Queries, TSQL/CLR SP, Functions, Replication, Migration and Reporting)
  • Knowledge of PowerBI and Looker Visualization and reporting capabilities
  • Strategic Thinking & Execution: You know how to define a long-term strategy for data infrastructure while also implementing the day-to-day tactical changes needed to make that strategy a reality. You are comfortable balancing strategic vision with hands-on execution.
  • Collaborative Leadership: You are a strong communicator and leader, capable of working with cross-functional teams, including data science, analytics, product, and business stakeholders, to ensure alignment and drive impactful data initiatives. You know how to break down complex technical issues into simple, actionable insights for non-technical teams.
  • Google Cloud Platform (GCP) High Proficiency in GCP services such as Google Cloud Storage, BigQuery, Dataproc, Cloud Data Fusion
