Job description

OVERVIEW

As an Investigative Analyst Intern, you will conduct in-depth research on transnational illicit & malign networks. You will work with a supervising analyst on a project in one of five analytical cells: Wildlife & Natural Resource Security, Organized Crime, Human Security & Conflict Prevention, State-Sponsored Threats, or Strategic Trade & Competition. From wildlife trafficking to nuclear proliferation, you will produce timely analysis on real-world issues and have the opportunity to make an impact.

In addition to attending a series of trainings on methodologies for open source data analysis and tools such as Palantir and Windward, Investigative Analyst Interns receive one-on-one mentorship to advance their professional development. 

PAST C4ADS INVESTIGATIVE ANALYST INTERNS HAVE: 

  • Contributed research to public reports
  • Drafted dossiers on networks engaged in human trafficking; illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing; kleptocracy; arms smuggling; and more
  • Briefed law enforcement and civil society partners 
  • Produced data visualizations 
  • Developed standard operating procedures for accessing specialized datasets around the world 

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Learn and apply advanced open source investigative methods to conduct detailed analysis of transnational illicit networks
  • Write a range of analytical products for government and/or civil society partners
  • Use cutting-edge analytical tools like Palantir to support research on illicit networks
  • Gain exposure to the variety and potential analytical applications of publicly available information (PAI)

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Overseas work or research experience
  • Native or professional-level fluency in Arabic, Russian, Spanish, Chinese, or other foreign languages to support research
  • Track record of examining illicit networks or conflict
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Undergraduate studies in any related field
  • Proven interest in or experience with data and technology
  • Experience with geospatial analysis is a plus, but not at all required!

PROGRAM DETAILS

  • Open to current undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent graduates.
  • Program starts 9/1/2016 and will run 12-14 weeks
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the US; C4ADS does not sponsor work authorizations for interns
  • Stipend of $9,600 per semester, for interns who can commit to at least 30 hours per week
  • Please note that we ask you are able to commit to at least 30 hours per week to your work.Â
