Position Overview
The Data Analytics Analyst 1 will serve in a key support role within the Operations Data Analytics Department.
This position is responsible for supporting the onboarding of new generation assets and updating existing assets within enterprise systems for current and future construction projects, acquisitions, modernization initiatives, and large-scale retrofit projects.
Generation assets may include:
  • Solar generation
  • Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
  • Combined Cycle (CC) units
  • Combustion Turbine (CT) units
  • Hydroelectric modernization projects
  • Environmental retrofit projects
  • Other generation assets and capital projects

The successful candidate will participate in project teams, gather and analyze equipment-related data, verify information with subject matter experts, and ensure accurate asset information is incorporated into Southern Company's work management systems.
This role combines data analytics, technical data management, field verification, business process support, and asset management generation.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
Generation Asset Onboarding
  • Support the onboarding of new generation assets into enterprise systems.
  • Update existing generation assets associated with construction projects, acquisitions, modernization activities, and plant upgrades.
  • Gather equipment-related information from engineering documents, project teams, plant personnel, and subject matter experts.
  • Validate asset information before entry into work management systems.
  • Assist with developing appropriate equipment hierarchies.
  • Ensure assets are accurately categorized within systems and subsystems.
  • Support data readiness prior to commercial operation of new generation assets.

Equipment Data Management
  • Create, review, and maintain equipment records.
  • Support development and maintenance of:
    • Equipment hierarchies
    • Preventive maintenance activities
    • Job plans
    • Inventory information
    • Asset-related technical data
  • Review equipment information for completeness, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Work with plant representatives and project teams to resolve data discrepancies.
  • Ensure accurate equipment identification and descriptions.

D-11 Equipment Identification Standard
  • Support adherence to the D-11 Southern Company Equipment Identification and Description Standard.
  • Provide guidance regarding appropriate equipment systems and subsystems.
  • Assist project and plant teams with proper equipment classification.
  • Promote standardization and consistency across equipment records.
  • Help ensure data entered into enterprise systems aligns with established Southern Company standards.

Data Analytics & Technical Analysis
  • Perform daily analysis of technical and operational data.
  • Analyze data from multiple sources to identify inconsistencies, patterns, trends, and opportunities.
  • Assist with data mining and data validation activities.
  • Develop insights that support operations, maintenance, and project decision-making.
  • Compare similar generating units to identify differences and opportunities for improvement.
  • Assist in identifying repeat issues or failures through data analysis.
  • Apply lessons learned and best practices across the generation fleet.

Data Integration & ETL
  • Support data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) processes.
  • Work with multiple data sources and databases.
  • Prepare and transform data for analysis and reporting.
  • Assist with integrating data into work management and analytical systems.
  • Validate data quality throughout the integration process.
  • Support process improvements that enhance data reliability and accessibility.

Work Management System Support
  • Support data entry and maintenance within Maximo.
  • Assist with developing equipment hierarchies within the work management system.
  • Review equipment and maintenance information prior to system entry.
  • Support plants and project teams with Maximo-related data requirements.
  • Help ensure maintenance strategies are accurately incorporated into the system.
  • Assist with identifying and resolving asset-data issues.

Maintenance Strategy Development
Work with project managers, plant personnel, engineers, and subject matter experts to:
  • Identify appropriate maintenance strategies.
  • Develop or review preventive maintenance activities.
  • Create or review job plans.
  • Support inventory-data development.
  • Ensure appropriate maintenance information is available prior to plant commercial operation.
  • Assist plants with maintaining consistent maintenance-data practices.

Field & Plant Support
This position requires significant interaction with Southern Company generating facilities.
Responsibilities may include:
  • Visiting generating plants.
  • Performing equipment walk-downs.
  • Verifying asset and equipment information in the field.
  • Comparing field conditions with technical documentation.
  • Working directly with plant personnel.
  • Assisting with plant questions and data concerns.
  • Gathering information necessary to update enterprise systems.
  • Supporting project and operational teams during site visits.

Candidates must be comfortable working in industrial generation environments.
Required Qualifications
Experience
  • Approximately 1-3 years of relevant data analytics, engineering, technical data, asset management, or related professional experience.
  • Experience working with large datasets and multiple data sources.
  • Experience analyzing and presenting technical or business data.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, evaluate, and resolve data-related issues.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple assignments simultaneously.

Education
