What Are the Qualifications to Get a Cybersecurity Internship?

Qualifications for a cybersecurity internship include enrollment in a post-secondary program in information systems or a related field. You can also find intern opportunities as a recent graduate. The US Department of Homeland Security offers an internship if you are a college student with a 3.0 GPA. You learn about duties related to penetration testing, system monitoring, security software use, and other ways to secure a website or network. Your responsibilities include staying current with the latest technologies and security breaches to understand how these attacks happen and how to prevent future ones. While you typically do not need professional experience with these issues, you do need keen analytical skills to spot threats and risks on the internet and protect the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cybersecurity Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cybersecurity Intern, you need a foundational understanding of computer networks, information security principles, and relevant coursework or certifications such as CompTIA Security+ or CISSP fundamentals. Familiarity with cybersecurity tools like Wireshark, Nessus, and basic scripting languages (Python, Bash) is commonly expected. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn make candidates stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for effectively supporting security operations, identifying vulnerabilities, and adapting to the evolving nature of cyber threats.

What types of projects or tasks are typically assigned to cybersecurity interns?

Cybersecurity interns commonly assist with tasks such as monitoring network activity for suspicious behavior, supporting vulnerability assessments, and helping to implement security protocols. They may also participate in research on emerging threats, assist with documentation, and work alongside experienced analysts during incident response exercises. This hands-on exposure is designed to build both technical and analytical skills in a collaborative environment, often with mentorship from seasoned professionals.

What is a cybersecurity internship?

A cybersecurity internship is a temporary position that allows students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in the field of cybersecurity. Interns typically assist with tasks such as monitoring networks for threats, responding to security incidents, and learning about security tools and best practices. These internships help individuals develop practical skills, build a professional network, and can often lead to full-time employment in the cybersecurity industry.

ABOUT KALLES GROUP:
Everyone deserves to be secure. Our mission at Kalles Group is to help secure the future for companies of all shapes and sizes.
While our expertise spans multiple disciplines, our method remains consistent: building trust and relationship with people -- whether you are a client, a consultant, or--in this case--a candidate.
No matter what role you come from--whether you're an executive or just starting your career-you can expect our highest level of attention and respect. We want to find the right fit for each role, but we also want you to find the right fit for your career.
We believe the best way to show you what our team is like is to treat you like you're already a part of it. We hope you'll consider joining our team of experienced professionals who are building their careers at Kalles Group-and having fun while doing it.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
You will play a key role in building, operating, and enhancing enterprise security platforms that protect critical systems across diverse cloud and technology environments. This role requires a hands-on engineer who thrives in a fast-moving environment, collaborates effectively across teams, and takes ownership of delivering secure, reliable, and scalable solutions. Your work will directly contribute to improving the organization's overall security posture through automation, optimization, and thoughtful platform design.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Design, deploy, and maintain enterprise-grade security platforms across multiple cloud providers, including AWS, Azure, GCP, and OCI.
  • Configure and support security tooling such as endpoint protection, cloud security posture management, and email security platforms.
  • Integrate security solutions with CI/CD pipelines and cloud-native services to enable automated detection and remediation workflows.
  • Develop and maintain scripts and automation to streamline platform operations, monitoring, and incident troubleshooting.
  • Collaborate with engineering, development, project management, and business teams to deliver secure, highly available, and cost-efficient services.
  • Author technical documentation, contribute to project planning, and create detailed test and validation plans.
  • Monitor platform performance and security metrics, tuning configurations to improve effectiveness and reliability.
  • Support secure deployments within containerized and virtualized environments.
  • Build dashboards and reporting to provide visibility into platform health and security posture.
  • Analyze logs, alerts, packet captures, and other security artifacts to support investigations and platform tuning.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to ensure continuity of critical security services.

ABOUT YOU:
  • Your values:
    • Integrity: You believe in doing the right thing, even when it's uncomfortable, seemingly inefficient, or costly.
    • Purposefulness: You have a desire to serve others with your skillset and an openness to continuous learning and growth.
    • Ownership: You stick to your commitments, follow up with action, and seek clarity in communication & expectations.

YOUR EXPERIENCE:
Required Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience in cybersecurity or a closely related technical field.
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience with programming or scripting languages such as Python, PowerShell, or Ruby.
  • Practical experience with cloud security technologies and automation practices.
  • Experience engineering and operating critical security services (e.g., EDR, CSPM, SIEM/SOAR, email security, Zero Trust, encryption platforms).
  • Experience integrating security platforms with CI/CD pipelines and cloud-native platforms.
  • Strong understanding of system design, technical architectures, and the full lifecycle of solution selection, implementation, and support.
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with stakeholders at all levels while maintaining a strong customer-service mindset.
  • Highly organized, deadline-driven, and effective in fast-paced environments.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills with a detail-oriented and methodical approach.
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and eager to learn new technologies and tools.
  • Strong focus on automation, efficiency, and continuous improvement with history of developing scripts to automate platform operations, monitoring and troubleshooting.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Relevant security certifications such as AWS Certified Security - Specialty, GSEC, GMON, AZ-500, CySA+, or equivalent.
  • Experience supporting large-scale security environments in technology, ecommerce, or similarly complex organizations.
  • Hands-on experience with infrastructure and container technologies such as Kubernetes, Terraform, Ansible, or similar tools.

WHAT WE OFFER:
  • The annual salary range for this role is $100,000-$150,000.
  • We offer Medical, Dental, Vision plans, 401K with matching, and PTO for salaried employees.
  • Work/life balance - we know there's more to life than work! We encourage our team to pursue other passions, get outside, and spend time with family. We work with clients and consultants to set expectations for a manageable workload.

LOCATION:
This role requires on-site presence at our client's location in Seattle, WA. We are currently only considering candidates that already live within commuting distance to Seattle, WA.
HOW TO APPLY:
Please fill out the form below (including uploading your most recent resume) and we'll be in touch! We know imposter syndrome can be a barrier to many great applicants. We hope you'll still consider applying. That's why we've made the application process as short and simple as possible.
