What is the difference between Cybersecurity Graduate vs Cybersecurity Analyst?
| Aspect | Cybersecurity Graduate | Cybersecurity Analyst |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Degree in cybersecurity, computer science, or related field; certifications often optional | Relevant certifications (e.g., CompTIA Security+), some experience preferred |
| Work Environment | Entry-level, training-focused roles, often in IT or security teams | Operational roles, monitoring security systems, incident response |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Internships, entry-level positions in tech, finance, healthcare | Full-time security teams across various industries |
Cybersecurity Graduates typically start in entry-level roles with foundational knowledge, while Cybersecurity Analysts are experienced professionals responsible for protecting systems and responding to threats. The roles often overlap in skills and environment, but analysts usually have more hands-on experience and certifications.

Job description
PREP Research Associate
This position is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Professional Research Experience Program (PREP). NIST recognizes that its research staff may want to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest and, therefore, requires those institutions to be recipients of a PREP award. The PREP program involves staff from a wide range of backgrounds conducting scientific research across various fields. Individuals in this position will perform technical work supporting the collaboration's scientific research.
Research Title: Research Associate - Senior Researcher for Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Cybersecurity
The work will entail:
The Senior Researcher for Applied AI in Cybersecurity is a senior technical expert responsible for the design, development, and deployment of trustworthy AI systems to secure industrial critical infrastructure. The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge research projects and manage the transition of these tools into operational industrial environments.
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
• Technical Leadership: Lead the development and deployment of applied AI initiatives, specifically focusing on the technical integration of AI within cybersecurity for critical infrastructure and manufacturing.
• Technical Analysis & Research: Execute complex technical analyses to build "trustworthy AI" frameworks, ensuring that AI deployments in cybersecurity are robust, explainable, and secure against adversarial attacks.
• Technical Coordination: Coordinate technical AI inputs across NIST and integrate emerging AI technologies into operational processes to enhance cybersecurity capabilities.
• Technology Transition: Manage the transition of co-developed laboratory research into scalable, functional solutions for U.S. industry partners and critical infrastructure stakeholders.
Qualifications
• • U.S. Citizen Preferred
• Experience in leading research and measurement science in artificial intelligence to solve key challenges in high-priority critical and emerging technology areas, such as cybersecurity for critical infrastructure.
• Experience in executing guidelines, pilot implementations, and standards for key artificial intelligence topics.
• Experience in transitioning key research to the U.S. industry to enable high-impact results.
• Knowledge of the NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF)

About Johns Hopkins University

Gilman believed that teaching and research go hand in hand—that success in one depends on success in the other—and that a modern university must do both well. He also believed that sharing our knowledge and discoveries would help make the world a better place. In 145 years, we haven’t strayed from that vision. This is still a destination for excellent, ambitious scholars and a world leader in teaching and research. Distinguished professors mentor students in the arts and music, humanities, social and natural sciences, engineering, international studies, education, business, and the health professions. Those same faculty members, along with their colleagues at the university’s Applied Physics Laboratory, have made us the nation’s leader in federal research and development funding every year since 1979. That’s a fitting distinction for America’s first research university, a place that has revolutionized higher education in the U.S. and continues to bring knowledge and discoveries to the world.
