Position Overview
Lead and manage the Trusts & Estates tax practice by delivering high-quality tax compliance, planning, and advisory services for estates, trusts, and high-net-worth individuals. The Trust & Estate Tax Manager will serve as the primary technical resource for estate, trust, and gift tax matters, supervise and develop staff, coordinate with advisors, and ensure timely, accurate filing and strategic tax planning.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee preparation, review, and filing of estate, trust, fiduciary and gift tax returns, including Forms 706, 709, 3520 and related federal and state filings.
- Provide technical estate and trust tax planning and analysis, including estate tax projections, basis calculations, portability, generation-skipping transfer issues, and charitable planning.
- Serve as the primary client contact for T&E tax matters; build and maintain strong client relationships and coordinate with attorneys, financial planners, and other advisors.
- Supervise, mentor, and train senior associates and staff; manage workflow, delegate assignments, and conduct quality reviews to ensure compliance with firm standards and deadlines.
- Research complex tax issues, maintain awareness of legislative and regulatory changes affecting estates and trusts, and translate technical developments into client-focused advice.
- Develop and implement process improvements, templates, and checklists to standardize workpapers, improve efficiency, and reduce risk.
- Manage project budgets, engagement proposals, and pricing; participate in business development and help grow the T&E practice.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Taxation, or related field; Master of Taxation or JD is a plus.
- CPA required; 5+ years of progressive experience in trusts and estates tax; prior experience as a Tax Manager or supervisory role preferred.
- Demonstrated technical expertise in Estate, Trust, and Tax matters and hands-on experience preparing and interpreting Forms 706, 709 and 3520.
- Practical experience with T&E (trusts & estates) practice management, fiduciary accounting, basis calculations, portability, and generation-skipping transfer tax issues.
- Strong client management, communication, and interpersonal skills; ability to explain complex technical matters to clients and advisors.
- Proficient with tax preparation software, Excel and research tools; strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to lead engagements, mentor staff, and contribute to business development and practice growth.
