What is FeatureCAM?

FeatureCAM is an automated computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software developed by Autodesk. It is primarily used for programming CNC machines, such as mills, lathes, and wire EDMs, by converting CAD models into machine toolpaths. FeatureCAM is known for its feature-based approach, which identifies and programs part features automatically, helping to speed up the manufacturing process and reduce programming errors. The software supports a wide range of machining strategies and is widely used in industries like aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing.

What is the difference between Featurecam vs CAD/CAM Programmer?

AspectFeaturecamCAD/CAM Programmer
Primary RoleCAM software for manufacturing and machiningProgramming CNC machines using CAD/CAM tools
Required SkillsCAM software proficiency, machining knowledgeCAD design, CNC programming, technical skills
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, machine shopsDesign offices, manufacturing facilities
CertificationsCAM software certifications, machining experienceCAD/CAM software certifications, technical degrees

Featurecam is specialized CAM software used to generate toolpaths for CNC machining, while a CAD/CAM Programmer focuses on creating CNC programs using various CAD/CAM tools. Both roles require knowledge of machining processes, but Featurecam is a specific software platform, whereas a CAD/CAM Programmer may work with multiple software solutions. Understanding the differences helps in choosing the right career path or software training.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FeatureCAM programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a FeatureCAM Programmer, you need expertise in CNC programming, a solid understanding of manufacturing processes, and often a technical qualification in engineering or machining. Proficiency with Autodesk FeatureCAM software, CAD/CAM systems, and familiarity with G-code are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help ensure efficient workflow and error-free production. These skills and qualities are critical for creating precise machining instructions, optimizing productivity, and maintaining high-quality manufacturing standards.

What are some common challenges FeatureCAM programmers face when integrating with existing manufacturing workflows?

FeatureCAM programmers often encounter challenges when adapting CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) processes to fit established shop floor workflows, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy CNC machines or existing tool libraries. Additionally, they may need to optimize toolpaths to reduce machining time while maintaining part quality, which requires close collaboration with machinists and production engineers. Understanding the nuances of the shop's preferred processes and communicating effectively with team members are crucial for successful integration.

Job description

Multi‑Axis CAM Programmer (Fusion 360/FeatureCAM)

Space Screw Inc is expanding. We manufacture precision components for multiple industries, including aerospace, and we’re seeking a CAM expert who thrives on translating complex prints into flawless parts.

A day in the life

You’ll kick off with blueprint reviews, applying GD&T to confirm critical features and inspection strategies. Next, you’ll build efficient toolpaths in Fusion 360, FeatureCAM, and Parts Maker, optimizing for high-speed machining. On the floor, you’ll set up and operate Haas multi-axis mills and lathes (including 5‑axis and live-tooling mill‑turns), prove out programs, and adjust feeds, speeds, and strategies in real time. You’ll shift smoothly between rapid R&D iterations and short-run production, own the process from raw stock to final inspection, and document improvements using Lean and 5S.

What you’ll do
  • Program and directly support machining of precision parts to print across a variety of CNC platforms.
  • Apply GD&T to interpret blueprints and to guide measurement approaches.
  • Set up, operate, and change over assigned CNC machines (Haas mills/turns) to meet schedule and quality requirements.
  • Use Lean Manufacturing principles and tools to drive continuous improvement and maintain 5S work areas.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues; refine toolpaths and offsets during production.
  • Perform in-process and final quality control using mechanical inspection tools.
  • Help clean and maintain CNC equipment.
  • Demonstrate reliable attendance and follow detailed safety and quality instructions.
What you’ll bring
  • Proficiency with Fusion 360, FeatureCAM, and Parts Maker; 10+ years’ experience preferred.
  • Hands-on programming, set-up, and operation of Haas CNC multi-axis milling and multi-axis turning.
  • Experience with 5‑axis milling, live‑tool lathes, mill‑turns, and/or multi‑task machines.
  • Expertise in high-speed machining strategies and tooling selection.
  • Ownership mindset over the entire manufacturing workflow, from first article to completion.
  • Ability to pivot between R&D prototypes and short production runs.
  • Skilled with mechanical inspection tools; strong troubleshooting capability.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and commitment to continuous learning on tools & techniques.
  • Physical ability to lift at least 50 lbs. unassisted.
  • Good eyesight, including depth perception, peripheral vision, and color differentiation.
Quality systems
  • Operate within ISO9001/AS9100 practices (preferred) and adhere to all safety and quality requirements.
Legal and compensationWage negotiable depending on experience. As a condition of employment, you will be required to pass a drug screen and a background check.
