What is a cutting machine operator?

Cutting machine operators are skilled workers responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining machines that cut materials such as metal, plastic, wood, or textiles into specified shapes and sizes. They read blueprints or work orders to determine the dimensions and tolerances required for each job. Operators monitor the cutting process, make adjustments as needed, and ensure quality control by inspecting finished pieces. Safety is a key aspect of the job, as operators must follow strict guidelines to prevent accidents and ensure smooth machine operation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cutting machine operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cutting Machine Operator, you need mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with CNC machines, safety protocols, and the ability to read blueprints or technical drawings are essential, and some employers may require OSHA certification. Strong problem-solving skills, reliability, and effective communication help operators adapt to changing production needs and maintain quality standards. These skills are crucial for ensuring operational efficiency, workplace safety, and the accurate production of materials or components.

What are some common challenges faced by cutting machine operators, and how can they be addressed?

Cutting Machine Operators often encounter challenges such as maintaining precision under time constraints, handling machine malfunctions, and managing varying material types. To address these, operators should follow strict safety and maintenance protocols, stay updated on equipment training, and communicate proactively with team members about issues or inconsistencies. Continuous learning and attention to detail can help ensure product quality and minimize downtime.

Job Type
Full-time
Description
Machine Operators: Finish Premium Label and Shrink Sleeve Work
We are actively filling 2nd shift and weekend shift openings, and give strong preference to candidates available for those schedules.
Cursive makes labels and shrink-sleeve packaging for leading consumer brands - the kind you recognize on the shelf. We've reimagined label manufacturing around automation, smart processes, and a lean team of skilled operators.
We're growing, well-capitalized, and hiring converting machine operators who want to run modern equipment and grow their skills.
The Role
We're hiring a full-time Converting Machine Operator to run digital finishing and converting equipment that turns printed webs into finished pressure-sensitive labels and shrink sleeves.
You'll run ABG and Digicon finishing lines, shrink-sleeve seaming equipment, and related converting machinery. If you've run converting, finishing, laminating, or die-cutting equipment in any industry, your skills transfer here - and we'll teach you the label-specific work.
Requirements
What You'll Do
• Operate digital finishing and converting equipment, including ABG and Digicon lines and shrink-sleeve seaming equipment
• Review work instructions and perform machine make-readies, die changes, and setups
• Prepare and stage tooling and materials ahead of production runs
• Run digital embellishments - embossing, hot stamp, cold foil, and screen print
• Inspect finished work for defects and confirm it meets customer specifications
• Communicate work order issues, quality concerns, and production variances to the Shift Supervisor, Production Manager, and Scheduler
• Train and support new operators and helpers as needed
• Participate in R&D trials and continuous improvement initiatives
• Accurately record shop floor and production data
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area and follow all safety policies
• Support team objectives, including assisting outside your primary role when needed
What We're Looking For
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Minimum of 1 year of machine operation experience in printing, converting, or a related production environment
• Experience with converting, finishing, die-cutting, laminating, or slitting equipment strongly preferred
• Hands-on experience running ABG and/or Digicon equipment is a significant plus
• Shrink-sleeve converting or seaming experience preferred
• Familiarity with digital embellishments (embossing, hot stamp, cold foil, screen print) preferred
• Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort making your own adjustments
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
• Organized and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
• Growth mindset with a desire to learn and improve
• Availability for 2nd shift or the weekend shift strongly preferred
Shift Schedule
We run four-day weekday shifts and a three-day weekend shift, so every schedule here comes with at least three consecutive days off:
• 1st shift - Tuesday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Three-day weekend, every week.
• 2nd shift - Tuesday through Friday, 2:00 PM to 12:00 AM. Three-day weekend, every week, plus a shift differential.
• Weekend shift - Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, 5:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Full-time hours in three days, four days off every week, plus a shift differential.
A shift differential is paid for 2nd shift and the weekend shift. We are currently prioritizing candidates available for either of those schedules - please note your availability when you apply.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs unassisted
• Ability to stand or walk for extended periods
• Ability to work safely around moving equipment in a moderately loud production environment
• Visual acuity to distinguish color, detail, and print quality
Why Join Cursive
• Highly competitive compensation based on skill and experience
• Comprehensive benefits package (medical, dental, vision, life insurance, STD, LTD, and 401k)
• Join a well-capitalized, fast-growing company disrupting the packaging industry
• Real career growth and advancement opportunities
