Public Service Trainee/Utility Clerk track is an unclassified, non-merit system job. Employment as a Public Service Trainee may provide an opportunity for promotion to the classified position of

Utility Clerk I

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Must be at least 18 years of age
  2. Must have a valid driver's license
  3. Acceptable Driving Record (based on MAWSS Driving Scale)
  4. Background Check Required
  5. Drug Test and Physical Required
  6. Verifiable GED or High School Diploma Required- NO EXCEPTIONS

DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in this category of work.) 

DEPARTMENTS

Customer Service, IT, Accounting, or other administrative departments at MAWSS

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK:

Various clerical and administrative duties related to the Plants, Field Operations, Central Laboratory, and other Miscellaneous departments. May also include duties related to the Accounting and Customer Service departments. This position may lead to a possible promotion to a permanent-status Merit System job as a Utility Clerk or Customer Service Representative (CSRI) after the appropriate working test periods are successfully completed.

THE PUBLIC SERVICE TRAINEE/UTILITY CLERK TRACK PROCESS

Step 1:

Public Service Trainee/Utility Clerk must work a total of 1,040 hours or more before applying for permanent classified employment under the Mobile County Personnel Board.

Step 2:

Once the Public Service Trainee has worked 1040 hours successfully within 6-7 months, the Public Service Trainee will be eligible to apply for promotion to Utility Clerk, which is a 5% increase in salary. As a Utility Clerk, the employee will be on a 6-month probationary period. Once the employee has successfully completed 6 months, they are eligible for an additional 5% merit raise.
