Successful builders rely on clear communication, strong project management skills, and adaptability to deliver high-quality results while ensuring client satisfaction.

What is the difference between Custom Home Builder vs Residential Contractor?

AspectCustom Home BuilderResidential Contractor
CredentialsLicenses in building and contracting, possibly specialized in custom homesGeneral contractor licenses, often with broader construction credentials
Work EnvironmentFocuses on designing and constructing unique, custom homesHandles various residential projects, including renovations and new builds
Industry UsagePrimarily in custom home markets, high-end residential projectsWidespread in residential construction, including subdivisions and renovations

While both roles involve residential construction, a Custom Home Builder specializes in creating unique, tailor-made homes, often working closely with clients on design details. A Residential Contractor has a broader scope, managing various residential projects, including custom homes, renovations, and general construction tasks. The choice depends on whether you seek a specialist in custom homes or a versatile contractor for multiple residential needs.

What does a custom home builder do?

A custom home builder is a professional or company that specializes in constructing unique, one-of-a-kind homes tailored to the specific needs, preferences, and designs requested by individual clients. They manage all aspects of the building process, including site selection, design collaboration, permitting, construction, and finishing details. Custom home builders work closely with architects, designers, and subcontractors to ensure the final product matches the client's vision and meets local building codes. Their role is distinct from production builders, who typically build multiple homes from a set of pre-designed plans.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a custom home builder?

To thrive as a Custom Home Builder, you need expertise in construction management, blueprint reading, budgeting, and a background in building sciences—often supported by degrees or certifications in construction or project management. Familiarity with project management software, building codes, and tools like CAD systems is typically required. Exceptional leadership, problem-solving, and client communication skills set top performers apart in this field. These competencies ensure high-quality, on-time, and on-budget delivery of unique homes while meeting client expectations and regulatory standards.

Is it hard to become a custom home builder?

Becoming a custom home builder typically requires a combination of relevant experience in construction, knowledge of building codes, and often a state license or certification. Developing skills in project management, carpentry, and understanding design plans can also be important, and the process may involve apprenticeships or working under experienced builders before starting independently.

Job description

You are good at what you do. The question is whether your current role is giving your skills the opportunity they deserve.
If your sales skills are strong but your income has a ceiling, has been declining or has simply become less predictable than it used to be - this role was built for you. Closet Factory is a nationally recognized, 40-year leader in custom home storage solutions, and we are looking for experienced, driven designers who understand how to listen to a client, build trust and close a sale that requires patience, skill and genuine expertise.
Unique even in our industry, two nationally recognized retailers have partnered with us - expanding our marketing reach, strengthening our brand recognition and fueling a growth trajectory that creates more opportunity for you every year. It's a career with the full backing of an established and growing brand.
You will join a passionate local team that wants to see you win. We generate and schedule your leads, convert them into appointments and provide software, training and support. Designers turn the chaos of each client's home into an organized work of art - custom closets, home offices, garages, pantries and more. Our clients invite you into their homes - your ability to listen thoughtfully, speak with confidence and present a compelling solution at a price point the client is comfortable proceeding with is what separates good designers from great ones.
When you present a Closet Factory solution, you represent something genuinely worth selling - every product we create is custom built to the client's exact specifications and comes with a transferrable limited lifetime warranty that stays with the home. The solution you provide is so compelling, our typical client buys or refers ten projects over their lifetime relationship.
If you have been capped - by a salary structure, a territory, a quota ceiling, a company going through hard times or simply a reduction in leads that has made your income less reliable - this role is built differently. Our brand attracts homeowners who are ready to buy - 85% of the prospects we meet with are actively planning a purchase. Whether they buy from us is where your consultative skills, listening ability and talent for presenting a compelling solution make all the difference. Our close rate of 54% - nearly double the industry average - is the direct result of a deliberate, client oriented sales process that takes budget seriously from the very first conversation.
This is a real sales role that rewards skill, process and patience. The prospect will not hand over their credit card - you will earn it. And here, what you earn is a direct and uncapped reflection of the effort you apply every single day.
Top performers earn $100,000+ in this role. The harder you work, the better you get and the more you earn. Beyond commission, we offer monthly and annual performance bonuses. Houston is a growth market for us - and the designers who join now will be best positioned to benefit as that growth accelerates.
Your product knowledge will develop through your existing skills, energy and desire to learn. If it's a mutual fit, you'll kick things off in our one-week paid training program - designed to add to what you already know rather than start from scratch.
You must be available to host 4 appointments per week in clients' homes. The schedule requires flexibility including evenings and Saturdays - in exchange, you control how you build your days. Your territory is the entire city of Houston and your appointment locations reflect that.
What You Get:
  • Company-generated, scheduled leads - no cold calling, no door knocking
  • 85% of prospects are actively planning to buy - you focus on the sale, not the search
  • Uncapped commission + monthly and annual performance bonuses
  • One-week paid training program - designed to build on your existing skills
  • Ongoing training and support
  • Access to a leading CRM platform to manage your leads and pipeline
  • The backing of a nationally recognized brand with 40 years of industry leadership
  • A product backed by a transferrable limited lifetime warranty

Specific Requirements:
  • 2+ years of Sales Experience
  • A growth mindset - we invest heavily in your training and want you to lean into it
  • Comfortable using Computers & Technology
  • Good Organization and Follow Up Skills
  • Home Improvement Related Sales Experience A+...but Not Necessary

About Closet Factory: The demand for custom home organization has never been stronger and we're growing to meet it. Closet Factory has spent the past 40 years perfecting our craft and we're just getting started. Our most successful designers arrived with strong sales foundations and found that this role gave their skills a larger stage and their efforts a proportional reward. If this opportunity sounds like it fits you, apply today - the process is straightforward and every application receives a personal response.
