What is the difference between Custom Home Builder vs Residential Contractor?

AspectCustom Home BuilderResidential Contractor

While both roles involve residential construction, a Custom Home Builder specializes in creating unique, tailor-made homes, often working closely with clients on design details. A Residential Contractor has a broader scope, managing various residential projects, including custom homes, renovations, and general construction tasks. The choice depends on whether you seek a specialist in custom homes or a versatile contractor for multiple residential needs.

What does a custom home builder do?

A custom home builder is a professional or company that specializes in constructing unique, one-of-a-kind homes tailored to the specific needs, preferences, and designs requested by individual clients. They manage all aspects of the building process, including site selection, design collaboration, permitting, construction, and finishing details. Custom home builders work closely with architects, designers, and subcontractors to ensure the final product matches the client's vision and meets local building codes. Their role is distinct from production builders, who typically build multiple homes from a set of pre-designed plans.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a custom home builder?

To thrive as a Custom Home Builder, you need expertise in construction management, blueprint reading, budgeting, and a background in building sciences—often supported by degrees or certifications in construction or project management. Familiarity with project management software, building codes, and tools like CAD systems is typically required. Exceptional leadership, problem-solving, and client communication skills set top performers apart in this field. These competencies ensure high-quality, on-time, and on-budget delivery of unique homes while meeting client expectations and regulatory standards.

Is it hard to become a custom home builder?

Becoming a custom home builder typically requires a combination of relevant experience in construction, knowledge of building codes, and often a state license or certification. Developing skills in project management, carpentry, and understanding design plans can also be important, and the process may involve apprenticeships or working under experienced builders before starting independently.

Job description

You are a driven, energetic, self-learner who wants to build your own business, set your own pace and help people love where they live. The role is 100% commission sales for a nationally recognized, 40-year leader in custom home storage solutions. Uniquely in our industry, two nationally recognized retailers have partnered with us — expanding our marketing reach, strengthening our brand recognition, and fueling a growth trajectory that means more opportunity for you. Build your own business within our business — it's entrepreneurship with the backing of an established brand.

You will work with our passionate local team that wants to see you win. We market for leads, convert them into appointments and provide software, training and support. You'll visit homes, listen to real problems, and create custom solutions that genuinely change how people live. What you provide is so compelling, our typical client buys or refers ten projects over their lifetime relationship.

Top performers earn $100,000+ with the right combination of time, effort and people skills while helping folks organize their lives. Beyond commission, there are performance bonuses. In sales, the harder you work, the more you earn — it's as simple as that.

You must be available to host 4 appointments per week in the clients' homes. Appointment dates and times include Saturdays and evenings. Your territory is the entire city of Houston and your appointment locations reflect that. If it's a mutual fit, you'll kick things off in our one-week paid training program.

 Specific Requirements:

  • 2+ years of Sales Experience

  • Home Improvement Related Sales Experience A+…but Not Necessary

  • A growth mindset — we invest heavily in your training and want you to lean into it.

  • Comfortable using Computers & Technology

  • Good Organization and Follow Up Skills
