What is a custodian?

Custodians or janitors are professionals responsible for cleaning, maintaining, and ensuring the safety and hygiene of buildings such as schools, offices, hospitals, and public spaces. Their duties typically include sweeping, mopping, dusting, emptying trash, and performing minor repairs. Custodians play a crucial role in keeping facilities clean, healthy, and presentable for occupants and visitors. They may work during or after regular business hours, depending on the needs of the facility.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a custodian?

To thrive as a Custodian or Janitorial professional, you need a solid understanding of cleaning procedures, safety standards, and basic maintenance, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with industrial cleaning equipment, chemical handling, and safety protocols like OSHA regulations is typically required. Strong attention to detail, reliability, and good communication skills help individuals excel in this role. These skills and qualities are essential to maintain a clean, safe, and healthy environment for building occupants.

What challenges do custodians face in maintaining large facilities?

Custodians working in large facilities often encounter challenges such as managing high-traffic areas that require frequent cleaning, coordinating with building occupants to minimize disruptions, and staying updated on the proper use of cleaning chemicals and equipment. These challenges are typically addressed through effective time management, clear communication with team members and supervisors, and ongoing training in safety protocols and cleaning techniques. Many custodial teams also use checklists and scheduling software to ensure all areas are consistently maintained and tasks are completed efficiently.
