What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Custodian, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Custodian, you need basic facility maintenance knowledge, attention to detail, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with cleaning chemicals, floor care equipment, and safety protocols like OSHA standards is typically required. Reliability, strong work ethic, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure clean, safe environments and efficient facility operations for all occupants.

What are custodians?

Custodians are professionals responsible for cleaning, maintaining, and securing buildings such as schools, offices, and public facilities. Their duties typically include sweeping, mopping, emptying trash, sanitizing restrooms, and performing minor repairs. Custodians play a vital role in ensuring a safe, clean, and orderly environment for all occupants. In some cases, they may also be called janitors or cleaning staff. Good custodians are detail-oriented, reliable, and able to work independently or as part of a team.

What are some common challenges custodians face during their shifts, especially when working after regular business hours?

Custodians often encounter challenges such as managing time efficiently to complete all cleaning tasks in a limited window, particularly after hours when buildings are empty. They may also deal with unexpected messes or maintenance issues that require quick attention. Additionally, working independently can require strong self-motivation and the ability to prioritize tasks without direct supervision. Communication with daytime staff and supervisors is important to ensure all needs are addressed and any issues are reported promptly.
