Job description

Position Summary:

The Senior Accountant works under limited supervision, and performs advanced accounting, financial reporting, and analytical functions in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), NCUA regulations, and Credit Union policies and procedures. This position maintains the integrity of the general ledger, prepares and reviews complex account reconciliations, supports the month-end and year-end close processes, and assists with regulatory reporting requirements. The Senior Accountant serves as a technical accounting resource for the Finance Department and plays a key role in ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting. This position assists with budgeting activities, financial analysis, audit support, fixed asset accounting, loan participation accounting, investment accounting, CUSO accounting, and process improvement initiatives. The Senior Accountant works closely with VP Finance and other departments to enhance operational efficiency, strengthen internal controls, and support strategic organizational objectives. The position also assists in training and supporting staff through collaboration, cross-training, and knowledge sharing. The Senior Accountant must complete all required annual training, including but not limited to Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Privacy Act, and other regulatory compliance training.
Key Responsibilities:
Customer Service amp; Collaboration
  • Provide prompt, professional, and accurate service to internal and external customers.
  • Work collaboratively with departments across the organization to resolve accounting-related issues and support business initiatives.
  • Serve as a resource to accounting staff by sharing knowledge, assisting with problem resolution, and supporting departmental cross-training efforts.
General Ledger amp; Financial Reporting
  • Maintain the accuracy and integrity of the general ledger through timely preparation and review of journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring financial information is complete, accurate, and timely.
  • Prepare financial analyses, schedules, and management reports to support decision-making.
Regulatory Reporting amp; Compliance
  • Assist with the preparation and review of the quarterly NCUA Call Report and FR2900 reporting.
  • Maintain knowledge of applicable accounting standards, banking regulations, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support internal and external audits, regulatory examinations, and requests for financial information.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with GAAP, NCUA regulations, and internal policies and procedures.
Fixed Asset Accounting
  • Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules.
  • Coordinate periodic physical inventories and asset verification procedures.
  • Ensure fixed asset additions, disposals, and transfers are accurately recorded and properly supported.
Process Improvement amp; Special Projects
  • Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency, reporting accuracy, and internal controls.
  • Participate in system implementations, process enhancements, and departmental projects.
  • Assist with research, special analyses, and strategic initiatives as requested by management.
  • Maintain and update departmental procedures and documentation.
Department Support
  • Serve as backup for the Accounts Payable Team Lead and other accounting functions as assigned including support for Staff Accountant duties.
  • Maintain working knowledge of key accounting responsibilities through job sharing and cross-training.
  • Participate in annual training or as required by BSA and the Privacy Act.
Organizational Engagement
  • Represent the credit union with professionalism and courtesy in all interactions.
  • Uphold the highest ethical standards in all interactions and responsibilities.

Requirements:
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • 5-7 years’ progressive accounting experience, financial institution or credit union experience preferred.
  • Experience with general ledger accounting, financial reporting, reconciliations, fixed asset management, and month-end close activities.
  • Experience supporting regulatory reporting and audit processes preferred.

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, lookup functions, and financial data analysis.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Teams) and other business software applications.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting principles.
  • Understanding of credit union or banking regulations and reporting requirements.
