Job description

Job Title: Substitute Teacher

Primary Role
The Substitute Teacher is responsible for implementing instructional plans and maintaining a safe, orderly, and effective learning environment in the absence of the assigned teacher. This position supports student learning by delivering instruction aligned to Indiana Academic Standards, supervising students, and upholding school and district expectations. The Substitute Teacher ensures continuity of instruction and contributes to a positive educational experience for all students.


Key Accountabilities
Job Specific Responsibilities

  • Implement lesson plans and instructional activities as provided by the regular teacher, aligned with Indiana Academic Standards
  • Deliver instruction and facilitate learning in a manner that supports student engagement and achievement
  • Maintain a safe, orderly, and inclusive classroom environment consistent with school and district policies
  • Supervise students at all times, including during transitions and non-instructional periods as assigned
  • Take accurate attendance and complete all required reports and documentation
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and administration
  • Follow all school safety procedures, emergency protocols, and reporting requirements
  • Protect student confidentiality in accordance with state and federal laws (e.g., FERPA)
  • Provide feedback to the regular teacher regarding student progress, behavior, and any concerns
  • Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, and other assigned areas
  • Perform other duties as assigned by school administration
